Asheville Parks & Recreation celebrated the grand opening of the city’s first all-abilities playground. The new playground, located at Murphy-Oakley Community Center, includes a variety of slides, climbing and spinning structures, musical instruments, swings, and designated cognitive play areas. A “serenity spot” is also included for children, parents, and caregivers to have a comfortable location to step away while still being involved in the playground.
The goal of the new playground is to spark imagination and encourage healthy fun for all children of all abilities. Inclusion is a key aspect of the design, emphasizing the importance of accommodating individuals with varying skills and capabilities. D. Tyrell McGirt, Director of Asheville Parks & Recreation, highlighted the city’s commitment to equity and ensuring that public spaces are accessible to everyone.
The playground features new sidewalks that make accessibility easier for people with wheelchairs or limited mobility. Colorful, non-slip rubber surfacing in the play area provides a safe environment for children to play without the risk of injury from falls.
