The Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office announced that a man recently received a sentencing for an attack that resulted in an Asheville woman sustaining ‘severe bruising and swelling.’
According to officials, 37-year-old Andy Guzman, originally from Florida, pleaded guilty to Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injury, Assault by Strangulation, and other charges on Thursday.
The incident unfolded when an Asheville Regional Airport Department of Public Safety officer was summoned to the front ticket desk following an employee’s observation of a woman with significant bruising and swelling standing in line.
The woman informed officials that she was attempting to escape the area with her four-year-old daughter after being attacked by Guzman earlier that morning.
She recounted that Guzman had viciously beaten and strangled her in their bathroom. She recounted losing consciousness at one point while Guzman allegedly choked her against the wall.
Staff members at the airport assisted the woman and her daughter in safely boarding a flight. Upon reaching the destination, the woman was promptly taken to the hospital for medical attention.
Following his guilty plea, Guzman received a sentence of 23 to 40 months in prison and a subsequent probationary period. The probationary sentence is set to be transferred to Florida post his release.
Additionally, Guzman was mandated to have no further contact with the victim as part of the sentencing.
The Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office handled the case, ensuring that justice was served for the victim of this violent attack. Incidents like these highlight the importance of swift and appropriate legal actions in protecting victims of assault.
Let this case stand as a reminder that acts of violence will be met with legal repercussions as the justice system works tirelessly to safeguard the community against harm.
