The tight-knit community of Bakersville, North Carolina is reeling from the loss of a beloved public servant and educator, Philip Morris McKinney, who passed away peacefully at the age of 83. Affectionately known as Phil, he dedicated over 30 years of his life to shaping the minds and hearts of students in Mitchell County.
Phil McKinney was born on December 7, 1940, in the Mine Creek community of Bakersville, NC, where his passion for family, nature, and basketball first took root. He followed in his family’s footsteps, becoming a pillar of the community through his career as a high school teacher and coach.
After graduating from Bowman High School in 1959, Phil continued to excel both academically and athletically. His love for sports eventually led him to coaching, where he amassed an impressive record of over 220 wins during his tenure as the Head Coach of the Boy’s Basketball team at Harris High School and later Mitchell High School.
Phil’s impact extended far beyond the basketball court. As an educator, he touched the lives of thousands of students, instilling in them a love for learning and writing. His dedication to teaching earned him recognition as a finalist for the North Carolina Teacher of the Year award, a testament to his passion and commitment to his profession.
Throughout his career, Phil not only taught the fundamentals of basketball but also imparted valuable life lessons to his players. Many remember him not only as a coach but as a mentor and friend who believed in their potential and pushed them to be their best.
Outside of his professional life, Phil was known for his love of fly fishing, spending countless hours on the streams of Grandfather Mountain and Roan Mountain. His dedication to the sport not only brought him joy but also forged lasting friendships with fellow enthusiasts.
In addition to his passion for fishing, Phil was a devoted member of Berry Chapel Baptist Church for over 50 years. His faith and commitment to serving his community were evident in his role as chair of the Mitchell County Board of Commissioners and his involvement in various charitable endeavors.
Phil McKinney leaves behind a legacy of excellence, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his family and community. His impact on the lives of those he taught and coached will be felt for generations to come, a testament to the lasting influence of a true servant leader.
A memorial service to honor Phil’s life and legacy will be held at Mitchell High School on Saturday, June 29, 2024. The community is invited to come together to celebrate the life of this remarkable individual and offer their support to his family during this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Neighbors Feeding Neighbors Food Ministry in honor of Phil McKinney’s commitment to serving others. The outpouring of love and support from the community is a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much of himself to those around him.
As Bakersville mourns the loss of one of its finest residents, Phil McKinney’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His passion for teaching, his love of the game, and his dedication to his community will be treasured and remembered for years to come.
