BBQ Competition in Asheville Aims to Benefit Local Police Foundation

BBQ Cook-off Celebration

Get Ready for a BBQ Bash in Asheville!

If you’re a fan of barbecue—and really, who isn’t?—mark your calendars for this weekend! Asheville is gearing up for the 4th Annual ‘Cue for a Cause amateur BBQ Competition, taking place this Saturday, September 21, at The Barn at Paint Fork. This exciting event promises not just mouthwatering food but also a fantastic time for the entire family while supporting a wonderful cause.

What’s ‘Cue for a Cause All About?

The ‘Cue for a Cause competition is an annual fundraiser organized by the Plyler Team at Lusso Realty, aimed at raising money for a local non-profit organization. This year, all the smoky flavors and fun will benefit the Asheville Police Foundation (APF), a newly established non-profit run by a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors. Although separate from the City of Asheville and the Asheville Police Department (APD), the APF’s mission is to rally community support and resources to enhance local law enforcement.

Specifically, the foundation focuses on assisting law enforcement personnel in western North Carolina with needs that often aren’t covered by standard budgets. David Plyler, who has a rich background in Emergency Services and Law Enforcement spanning nearly two decades, expressed the goal behind this event: “Many people, especially given the turmoil of the last few years, have asked how they can support the men and women in our local law enforcement. Here is what you can do: support our local law enforcement officers and agencies.”

Community Engagement at its Best

The Asheville Police Foundation is dedicated to fostering a positive relationship between the police department and the community. In alignment with this mission, APD Chief Mike Lamb is deeply committed to community outreach efforts aimed at building trust and understanding. A local himself, Chief Lamb has spent 28 years with the Asheville Police Department, starting his journey here back on February 16, 1998. Through various roles, from patrolman to captain, he has shown a consistent dedication to community engagement.

Through programs like the APD Pod Squad podcast, listeners can tune in for officer profiles, cold cases, upcoming community events, and segments where they can “Ask The Chief” directly. The podcast reflects the department’s commitment to staying in touch with the community it serves.

What Can You Expect at the Event?

Admission tickets are priced at just $25, and the experience you’ll get is well worth it! Your ticket includes a delicious BBQ dinner catered by High Ridge Adventures Outfitting Camp & BBQ, along with the sounds of a live bluegrass band to keep the atmosphere lively. There will be family-friendly games and activities to keep the little ones entertained.

But that’s not all! There are also exciting door prizes to be raffled and a thrilling 50/50 raffle to add to the fun. If you’re feeling competitive, you can look forward to a blind-judged BBQ competition featuring categories such as pork (pulled or chopped), wings, brisket, ribs, chicken, and even the coveted title for best side dish. There are already several amateur teams lined up to showcase their grilling skills!

While entries for the BBQ teams have closed, the event is open to the public. So gather your friends, family, and fellow BBQ lovers, and come out to support the Asheville Police Foundation while enjoying a day filled with fun and flavor.
