Community celebration for Black History Month in Asheville.
Asheville is set for a vibrant Black History Month celebration, led by the YMI Cultural Center’s reopening festivities. Kicking off with ‘The Warm Up,’ featuring storytelling and arts, the month continues with events like a special performance by the Black Diamond Performance Ensemble and a gala honoring community contributions. Emphasizing hospitality and cultural engagement, the YMI invites everyone to join in celebrating history and creativity.
Asheville is buzzing with excitement as the YMI Cultural Center gears up to celebrate both Black History Month and the grand reopening of its newly renovated historic center! Under the enthusiastic leadership of Executive Director Sean Palmer, the YMI is ready to light up the community with vibrant events, all centered around this month’s theme of TERANGA, embodying the spirit of radical hospitality.
The festivities will kick off on February 7 with “First Friday on The Block – ‘The Warm Up’,” an event that promises to be a delightful blend of storytelling and the arts. Locals can look forward to a lively evening at community hotspots like Noir Collective, LEAF Global Arts, Penny Cup, and of course, the YMI. From heartfelt anecdotes to inspiring performances, this event is sure to warm hearts and bring people together.
Also on February 7, attendees will have the pleasure of enjoying a special performance by the Black Diamond Performance Ensemble. With their stunning spoken word vignettes, led by talented artist Penny Meacham, the YMI auditorium will come alive with powerful expressions and moving narratives, setting the stage for a phenomenal month ahead.
Mark your calendars for February 12, as the YMI Cultural Center celebrates its 135th birthday with an event called “Choir Practice with the Community.” This occasion invites everyone to partake in lively gospel music and fellowship, reflecting on the center’s long-standing commitment to engaging the community through music.
But that’s not all! February 27 will also be marked by a grand reopening and a ribbon-cutting ceremony, proudly announcing the completion of a five-year renovation journey. With fresh updates that include a modernized auditorium, upgraded gallery, conference room, and flexible classrooms, the YMI is now equipped to host both public and private events like never before.
The culmination of these remarkable events will take place on February 28 with the YMI Honors Gala. This special evening is set to celebrate individuals who have played a vital role in the center’s journey. Additionally, the gala will unveil the new Kujichagulia Organizations-in-Residence Program, designed to bolster the growth of Black organizations in the area through dedicated meeting spaces and workshops.
Looking ahead, the YMI has some thrilling programming planned for 2025, including initiatives inspired by the renowned poet Nikki Giovanni. Expect enriching health and wellness projects, such as yoga and line dancing, aimed at promoting overall community well-being.
The center will also implement monthly pop-up programming, transforming its spaces into vibrant marketplaces for cultural dialogues. Additionally, the new Kuumba Artist in Residence Program aims to celebrate and showcase the incredible creativity of local artists, allowing them to share their talents with the community.
A unique musical initiative, the Banjul – Banjo Music Series, is on the horizon, aiming to link African musical traditions to the heart of Appalachia, thereby enriching our community’s diverse musical heritage.
Throughout February, the YMI will also host a series of community events, featuring art exhibits, storytelling sessions, discussions, and food events, all aimed at fostering engagement and mutual cultural appreciation throughout Asheville.
As the YMI Cultural Center steps into this exciting chapter, there’s no denying that February will be a month filled with warmth, creativity, and heart for everyone in Asheville. Let’s embrace this opportunity to celebrate Black history together!
