Black Mountain: Lake Tomahawk Dam Repair Update

Black Mountain: Lake Tomahawk dam repair update

The work being done to the Lake Tomahawk dam is nearing completion and should be done in the “next few weeks.”

Final Touches and Decorative Fence

The work that still needs to be done includes installing a soil layer and “seeding the area with appropriate grasses.” The town will also place a decorative fence with lighting along the top of the dam.

Cost and Lighting Replacement

The town had to choose between no lights or utility poles with LED lights at either end of the dam. However, to maintain the beauty of the lake area and not be a nuisance to the nearby homes, a decorative fence with lighting was chosen.

Total Project Cost and History

The total project cost for the dam repair is $751,000, covering professional services, engineering, design, and construction. The original dam was built in 1934 as part of the Living New Deal.

Previous Dam Issues

The dam had been classified as a high hazard dam and faced seepage issues in 2019. Engineering studies and exploration were conducted to identify the source of the problem, leading to the current repair work.

Construction and Timeline

Construction on the dam repair project began on March 25, with various components like overtop protection, blanket and toe drain, articulating block, and topsoil layer being added to strengthen the dam.

Return to Normal Water Levels

Initially, the water levels at Lake Tomahawk were lowered for the repairs, but levels have returned to normal as the project nears completion.

Town Funding and Support

The town of Black Mountain utilized American Rescue Plan Act funds to support capital projects like the dam repair, showcasing the commitment to improving community infrastructure for the benefit of citizens.

Appreciation for Construction Crew

The construction crew has been recognized for their efforts and for engaging with curious onlookers interested in the project progress. The completion of the project is anticipated to serve the community for years to come.
