In the heart of Burlington, a remarkable story unfolds. Meet Brandon Smith, a man whose journey from resisting his calling to embracing it wholeheartedly shines a light on the power of purpose and community service. At just 12 years old, Brandon felt that undeniable calling to become a pastor, but like many of us facing a pivotal life decision, he initially resisted. “I fought it! I ran from pastoring for years,” he recalls, reflecting on that tumultuous time.
Everything changed for Brandon in 2010 during a casual cookout at his mother’s house. What he thought would be a regular family gathering turned into a pivotal moment in his life. “The chairman of the deacon board called me over. He said, ‘Hey, do you have a minute?’ And I’m like, ‘Sure, what’s going on?’” Brandon’s heart raced when he learned about the vote that had been cast—“to become my pastor.” He was in pure shock; he didn’t even know a vote had taken place!
When I asked Brandon why he had initially run from his calling, he shared some profound insights. “It wasn’t so much about what I wanted to give up, but more about what I had to accept,” he explained. He recognized that leading people isn’t an easy task, especially as a pastor. “The hardest part was accepting that there are times when I’ll have to lead and pray for people who don’t like or appreciate me.” His honesty struck a chord, showing just how challenging pastoral care can be.
Brandon’s journey is unique. After finishing high school, he enlisted in the military. This experience equipped him with valuable skills in leadership and conflict resolution—both essential tools for a pastor. As he dedicated himself to ministry, these skills served him well, allowing him to navigate the complexities of church leadership with grace and wisdom.
For the past 12 years, Brandon has served as a beloved pastor, deeply committed to his Burlington community. Alongside his pastoral duties, he also serves in the National Guard. Recently, he was deployed to Asheville to assist in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. “The destruction was overwhelming,” he described. The devastation he witnessed was like nothing he had ever seen before.
Brandon painted a vivid picture of the chaos he encountered. “It felt like the scene from the movie ‘Independence Day,’” he said, recalling the heavy air filled with despair and brokenness. “People had lost everything! Their homes, belongings, even a sense of normalcy.” He felt the weight of their loss deeply, realizing that many were simply trying to survive in the aftermath of disaster.
In his mission, he took on responsibilities that involved not just transporting supplies but also ensuring that soldiers in the field received what they needed. “We became a support operation,” he explained. The effort to bring supplies to those in need was crucial and gave him a sense of purpose amidst the chaos.
A pressing question arose about the assurance that aid reached those who needed it most. Brandon emphasized that there were systems in place, including checkpoints and welfare checks, to guarantee that no one was left behind. “People were literally working around the clock,” he said, pointing out the dedication of many who often go unrecognized.
As our conversation continued, Brandon shared an important message about unity and community. “We need to build stronger, more resilient communities today so future generations don’t have to spend their time fixing what we could have addressed beforehand,” he urged. It’s a call for action and awareness, so we can come together and support each other effectively.
Brandon also shared his go-to scripture when facing personal challenges. “Romans 8:31: If God is for us, who can be against us?” This verse is a beacon for him, reminding him that through faith, he can overcome any obstacle.
Brandon Smith is not just a pastor; he’s a community leader who embodies resilience, dedication, and love for his neighbors. His journey has inspired not only his congregation but also those who come in contact with him. As he steps into this new chapter of his life, we’re excited to see how he answers the call to serve God’s people in even greater ways.
