Animals being cared for at Brother Wolf Animal Rescue

News Summary

Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville, NC is overcoming significant challenges posed by Hurricane Helene, which destroyed their facility. The team successfully evacuated over 100 animals before the storm, ensuring their safety. Currently operating from a temporary location, Brother Wolf continues to facilitate adoptions and is planning a new shelter to help even more animals. As they work towards recovery, community support and foster homes remain crucial for their mission.

Asheville’s Brother Wolf Animal Rescue Rising from Hurricane Debris

In Asheville, the dedicated team at Brother Wolf Animal Rescue is showing remarkable resilience as they overcome the challenges set by last year’s Hurricane Helene. The storm swept through the area six months ago, leaving a trail of destruction that completely washed away their facility near the Swannanoa River. Despite this devastation, Brother Wolf is making incredible strides in their recovery, working to continue their mission of saving animals in need.

A Close Call Led to a Successful Evacuation

Just a day before the hurricane made landfall, the staff and volunteers of Brother Wolf executed a rapid evacuation of over 100 animals from their shelter. In a heartwarming display of community spirit, everyone rallied together and successfully relocated these furry friends to safety within just two hours. Their timely efforts ensured that every dog, cat, and pet was saved from the impending flood, and for that, the organization is deeply grateful.

New Temporary Home, Same Big Heart

Currently, Brother Wolf is operating out of the ASPCA’s spay/neuter clinic located on Leicester Highway in West Asheville. This new location allows the team to continue their vital operations while they work on building a new facility. In the meantime, they host adoption events every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a noteworthy achievement of successfully facilitating the adoption of 130 animals so far this year. Those looking to welcome a furry companion into their home are encouraged to attend these events and help give a second chance to these beautiful animals.

Planning for a Bright Future

As Brother Wolf looks toward the future, exciting developments are underway. The organization is in the planning stages for a new shelter, collaborating with realtors, architects, and engineers to design a modern facility that will meet the needs of the community and the animals they serve. Leah Craig Chumbley, the executive director, expressed immense excitement about the outpouring of community support for this new project. The aim is to create a shelter that will save the lives of countless animals for generations to come.

A Call for Foster Homes

While the organization works diligently to rebuild, there is an urgent need for volunteers to assist in fostering. Currently, all animals from Brother Wolf are in foster care, and with 137 pets displaced due to the flood, providing loving temporary homes has become essential. One particularly touching story is that of a senior dog named Sugarplum, who was rescued after being left alone for weeks following her owner’s passing. This unfortunate isolation underscores the critical need for foster homes that can offer stability and love to the animals until they can find their forever homes.

Community Support is Key

The former Brother Wolf shelter has had an impressive history, supporting over 100,000 animals throughout its existence. However, the recent flooding rendered it unusable, leading to an urgent call for monetary donations to aid in rebuilding efforts. The support from the Asheville community, as well as from across the country, plays a crucial role in their efforts to create a new facility.

Everyone can Help Make a Difference

For those interested in making a difference in the lives of these animals, every contribution helps. Whether through fostering an animal, attending adoption events, or providing financial support, community involvement is invaluable to Brother Wolf’s mission. The organization doesn’t just focus on Asheville; they also extend their services to support various communities across western North Carolina, providing essential care and placement for animals in need.

As Brother Wolf Animal Rescue continues to rebuild from the ruins of Hurricane Helene, they stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of compassion and community. Together, they are determined to ensure that every animal has a chance at a loving home.
