As residents of Buncombe County cope with the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, a helpful program is now available to assist those struggling to purchase food. The Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP) is open for applications from October 18 to October 24, specifically targeting individuals and families not currently receiving Food and Nutrition Services benefits who have been impacted by the recent storm.
Residents can start the application process right away through an online pre-registration tool at epass.nc.gov. This online option will be available until Tuesday, October 22. After filling out the pre-registration form, applicants will need to call the D-SNAP Virtual Call Center at 1-844-453-1117 from October 18 to 24 to complete the application process.
To make it easier for everyone, residents are encouraged to apply according to their assigned days based on their last names; however, if that doesn’t work out, they won’t be turned away at any time during the application period. For those who prefer to apply in-person, applications can be submitted at the Buncombe County Health and Human Services office located at 40 Coxe Ave. in Asheville. It’s worth noting that the lines may be long, so reaching out via phone might be the best option.
Wondering if you’re eligible? To qualify for D-SNAP, individuals and households must have experienced disaster-related food loss. While there are standard income eligibility criteria, many other factors are considered. This means you may still qualify even if you think you exceed the income limits. Residents are encouraged to apply, as this program is designed to help those who might not typically receive food assistance.
Phillip Hardin, the Buncombe County Economic Services Director, stated, “This program will be able to help people replace food who normally might not qualify for Food Assistance.” The benefits can provide a one-time allotment that varies based on household size, income, and specific losses related to the disaster.
Eligible households can expect to receive their benefits within just three days of completing the application. This aid comes in the form of an EBT card, which is valid for up to nine months to help boost shopping power during a tough time.
If anyone is unable to apply in the county they live in, they can visit any other qualifying county throughout Western North Carolina. Additionally, those who may face challenges, such as individuals with disabilities or mobility issues, can designate an authorized representative to complete the application on their behalf. Forms are available in both English and Spanish, underscoring the county’s commitment to accessibility.
It’s important to remember that the D-SNAP Call Center is open to assist individuals through the application process. This supportive measure aims to make sure that the community can access the vital resources they need to recover from the storm’s impact. Long wait times may occur, but county officials are working diligently to process applications as quickly as possible.
With D-SNAP, Buncombe County is extending a lifeline to those impacted by Hurricane Helene, ensuring that no one has to face food insecurity alone during this challenging time. If you or someone you know might benefit from this program, consider taking steps to apply before the window closes on October 24. This could be the help your household needs to regain a sense of normalcy.
