Asheville, N.C. is known for its breathtaking views, lively arts scene, and a sense of community that draws everyone together. However, on Friday, November 8, the scenic Harrah’s Cherokee Center transformed from a venue for entertainment to a hub of hope and opportunity for many local residents. In the wake of Storm Helene, the city has faced a significant challenge, with over 25,000 residents filing for unemployment due to the extensive damage caused by the storm.
One of the individuals affected is Stephan Jordan, who was an in-room dining server at the Grand Bohemian Hotel. “I was really enjoying my job and the amazing people I worked with in Biltmore Village,” he shared. “But after the storm, they determined that the damage was just too extensive. They laid off the entire staff, and that was just devastating.” Stephan’s story is echoed by many others in the area, all looking for new employment opportunities after the storm turned their lives upside down.
Recognizing the urgent need for help, the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Land of Sky Commission took the initiative to organize the WNC Mountain Strong Career Fair. “We need help,” stated Diana Blackett, the Chamber’s Workforce Partnerships director. “So many people are out of work, and there are numerous employers eager to find employees. We had to step in and figure out how we could support both sides.”
The response from the community was heartwarming. “Employers answered the call,” Diana continued. “We had companies even from as far as South Carolina and Raleigh reaching out to participate.” This collaboration showcases the strength of community bonds, as local businesses and job seekers joined forces in the face of adversity.
Among the attending employers was Kenneth Bodenhamer, a vendor with Raumedic, who shared, “We knew we had to support the community after hearing so many stories from people affected by Helene. Being here today makes us better employers and solid community partners.” It’s a sentiment felt by many who came together that day.
Job seekers like Derrick Hill were also present. Currently unemployed, Derrick mentioned he works at Grove Park Inn and expressed concern for his family during this challenging time. “I shared the information about this fair with my coworkers,” he said. “We have two kids, and we’re all just trying to make ends meet. I felt it was important to come here and explore my options.”
The Mountain Strong Career Fair is just the beginning of the support being offered to those impacted. A follow-up event is already scheduled for November 19 at the Blue Ridge Mall, running from noon to 6 p.m. This fair aims to provide even more resources and connections for job seekers. A list of participating employers will be available to help guide attendees toward finding their next opportunity.
As Asheville continues to heal and rebuild from the storm’s aftermath, local initiatives like the career fair help to remind us of the strength and resilience of this community. Through cooperation, compassion, and hard work, Asheville is taking meaningful steps toward recovery and rebuilding livelihoods in the wake of Storm Helene. The spirit of community support is alive and well, proving that together, we can overcome even the toughest challenges.
