Community Champions Celebrated by United Way

Asheville, NC – United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County recently honored local leaders at their annual Community Impact Awards Dinner, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to the community and United Way’s mission of creating a place where everyone belongs and thrives.

Celebrating Local Leaders

The event, sponsored by Capstone Health Alliance, highlighted the following outstanding individuals:

Julia Darity | Live United Award

Julia Darity, a dynamic youth leader from Asheville, received the Live United Award for her exceptional leadership in advancing social justice awareness and action for youth in the community.

Sybil Jefferson | Gamechanger Award

Sybil Jefferson, an alumna of Asheville High School, was recognized with the Gamechanger Award for her outstanding leadership in improving systems for equitable student learning and educational excellence.

Hekmet Bessio | Volunteer of the Year

Hekmet Bessio, a dedicated volunteer who arrived in the U.S. last year, was honored for her exceptional commitment to the community, having contributed over 220 volunteer hours to local nonprofits.

Jamye Davis | The Circle of Hope Award

Jamye Davis, who devoted 25 years to Big Brothers Big Sisters of WNC, received The Circle of Hope Award for her extraordinary leadership and compassion in serving the youth of Western North Carolina.

Susanne Swanger | Women United Taylor Foss Award

Susanne Swanger, a former Board Chair of United Way and Associate Superintendent at Buncombe County Schools, was acknowledged with the Women United Taylor Foss Award for her philanthropic commitment and leadership.

Blue Ridge Power | Spirit of the Mountains Award

Blue Ridge Power, a local business, received the Spirit of the Mountains Award for its unwavering support of the community and United Way, particularly through its contributions to sustainability efforts and youth success programs.

United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County expressed gratitude to all the honorees for their dedication and contributions to improving the lives of individuals and families in the community.
