Asheville, North Carolina, is experiencing a wave of community spirit following the damage caused by Hurricane Helene. One of the hardest-hit local businesses, 12 Bones Smokehouse and Brewing, is counting both the costs and the kindness of its neighbors as they navigate through the aftermath of the storm.
The co-owners of 12 Bones, Bryan and Angela King, have shared their gratitude as residents and fellow business owners step up to help in any way they can. “Seeing the community come together like it has … been incredibly heartwarming,” described Bryan. The Kings have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support, with many reaching out to offer assistance or simply to lend a listening ear.
As the couple begins to assess the damage at their Asheville location, it becomes clear that they have a long road ahead. “I don’t even know. Walking through there … there’s mud in the attic,” noted Angela. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of their flagship restaurant, their spirits remain high, buoyed by the goodwill surrounding them.
The Kings are not only focused on the immediate damage but are also taking steps to secure their business’s future. They have filled out forms with the Small Business Administration for relief and are working on filing insurance claims. However, the situation is particularly tough on their staff, as Angela pointed out, “Unemployment is only like $324 a week. That’s not enough for the staff to pay their rent.” To support their team, friends have launched a GoFundMe account, encouraging community members to chip in where they can.
Luckily, not all is lost for the Kings. Their two other locations in nearby Arden were largely unscathed and remain open for business. “We’re selling ribs, pulled pork, and more,” stated Bryan, happy to continue serving their loyal customers. Fans of their renowned blueberry chipotle sauce can still place orders online, offering some comfort amidst the chaos and ensuring that a piece of normalcy continues for the community.
As news of the hurricane’s impact spreads, it’s clear that Asheville is a place bound by strong ties and resilience. The Kings’ story is just one example of how amidst the challenges, there lies an opportunity for growth and connection. Volunteers are stepping in not only to help businesses like 12 Bones but also to ensure that everyone in need receives support in this trying time.
As the storm clouds slowly lift, Bryan and Angela remain hopeful. “It’s still too early to say what’s next,” Angela admitted, but their determination to rebuild, backed by a community eager to help, is a powerful starting point. In Asheville, neighbors helping neighbors is not just a saying; it’s a way of life.
In the coming weeks, the Kings plan to keep their community updated on their progress and potential reopening of their main location. Until then, they are grateful for the support from their friends, family, and fellow Asheville residents.
As the situation evolves, residents are reminded of the power of supporting local businesses. Whether it’s through direct donations, visiting open locations, or simply spreading the word about recovery efforts, every small act can make a big difference.
The story of 12 Bones is a testament to the strength of the Asheville community. Together, they are working not just to survive but to thrive, proving that even in the face of adversity, hope, support, and good food can come together to help rebuild a brighter future.
