Community Unites to Raise Over $1 Million for Artists Impacted by Hurricane Helene

Community Shows Resilience: Craft Futures Fund Surpasses $1 Million to Aid Artists Affected by Hurricane Helene

Asheville, NC – In a heartwarming display of community support, the Center for Craft has announced that its Craft Futures Fund has successfully raised over $1 million to assist craft artists in Western North Carolina who were significantly impacted by the recent devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. The outpouring of generosity from both individuals and organizations highlights just how crucial the craft sector is to this region’s identity.

A Rapid Response to Community Needs

With hurricane winds destroying studios and galleries across the state, the Center for Craft quickly mobilized support, disbursing more than $300,000 to over 600 artists in the community. “We’ve seen the response to the Fund surge beyond our expectations,” stated a spokesperson from the Center for Craft. “This response indicates the strong communal ties and the tremendous value placed on this artistic community.”

Initially, the Craft Futures Fund hit an impressive $876,000 through grassroots donations and major contributions. The fact that this number surpassed $1.2 million shows a growing commitment from supporters who cherish Western North Carolina’s vibrant craft culture.

Supporters Step Up

The outpouring of support has come from various sources, including local foundations and many individual donors, all recognizing the immense value that craft brings to local culture and the economy. The Windgate Foundation, Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, and Bresler Family Foundation are just a few of the noteworthy supporters who have helped fuel this initiative.”

Craft Culture in Crisis

Hurricane Helene delivered a catastrophic blow not just to Asheville but also to the surrounding areas where crafts have deep roots, affecting 29 counties including Spruce Pine, Burnsville, Marshall, and Chimney Rock. The destructive force of the storm didn’t just damage buildings; it upended livelihoods, leaving many artists without the tools they need to create.

These communities are culturally rich, and the craft sector has long been their economic backbone. Losing studios, galleries, and vital infrastructure is devastating as many of these areas rely on tourism related to craft. The emotional toll is just as significant, with the loss of irreplaceable artwork affecting artists far beyond the dollars and cents.

Looking to the Future

The Center for Craft is now focusing on a multi-phase approach to expand relief efforts. They are teaming up with key partners like Village Potters Clay Center and Southern Equality Studios to quickly identify artists who need help and to expedite funding. The first phase provided $500 grants to those in urgent need, with applications open until November 17.

As the needs become clearer, the Center plans to introduce higher-level grants aimed at aiding long-term recovery for the regional craft community.

How You Can Help

The Center for Craft is making a heartfelt appeal for donations to keep these relief efforts alive and growing. Every contribution—no matter the size—helps artists as they work to regain footing in their crafts and lives. “We invite everyone who values the power of creativity to join us,” said a representative from the Center. “Your donation is a powerful step toward helping Western North Carolina’s artists rebuild and thrive.”

Getting Involved

If you’re interested in supporting the Craft Futures Fund or want to apply for relief, you can find more information on the Center for Craft’s website. Your support is integral to ensuring that the rich cultural landscape of Western North Carolina continues to thrive.

As the community comes together during this challenging time, it’s clear that the spirit of craft will endure, bringing hope and resilience to a region that holds creativity in its very heart.
