Discovering Candler: A Community in Transition

As the sun peeks through the cloudy skies over Candler, North Carolina, a vibrant community is buzzing with ideas and creativity. With a slight chance of a rain shower today and a comfortable high of 71°F, it’s the perfect weather to embark on a small adventure.

Charming Roads with Quirky Names

One delightful aspect of this rural area are its amusingly named roads. Just a few hundred yards off Case Cove Road lies Gitter Done Lane, a tongue-in-cheek tribute to productivity, which joins the equally whimsical Pop Walker Road. Other locals can be found meandering down Bunny Trail or Haviture Way, adding an element of charm to the everyday hustle and bustle.

Candler Business District: A Blend of Progress and Tradition

At the heart of Candler lies the Business District, frequently traversed by drivers on Smokey Park Highway. Here, the landscape transforms from suburban charm to business hub, showcasing a mix of one and two-story brick buildings and steel-framed enterprises. From auto parts shops to cozy dental offices, this area is a vital pulse for local commerce.

But step just a short distance away from the hustle, and you’ll discover the serene beauty of Candler’s green pastures and gentry houses. It’s fascinating how you can drive for just a mile and transition from the busy highway to farmland dotted with barns and rail fences, a testament to the community’s rich history.

Art as a Catalyst for Change

In the spirit of embracing the future, a photography exhibit by local talent Bob Ware is currently on display at the Ferguson YMCA in Candler. The exhibit, running until October 30, offers a visual narrative of the community’s past and present while igniting conversation about its future. In collaboration with ArtsvilleUSA, the exhibit uses art to explore ideas for Candler and Enka’s development.

Imagining a Community Center

Among the exciting prospects discussed is the creation of a community center. Imagine a place where students can dive into after-school art and theater programs, where workshops and gatherings bring everyone together. A community center could even offer space for exhibitions and events, serving as a gathering spot for the community to connect and collaborate.

A History Rich with Possibility

Candler, situated between the Asheville line and Buncombe County’s western border, has a history marked by transformation. The iconic yet deteriorating Enka Clock Tower stands as a reminder of the community’s treasured past, while whimsical street signs mark the paths of tidy neighborhoods nestled among trees that line the roads.

As Candler’s landscape continues to evolve, there are numerous signs of change on the horizon. Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College has recently approved a new Master Plan, and a new Pisgah View State Park is in the works. An upcoming exit off I-40 is also scheduled to improve accessibility, paving the way for exciting new industrial growth.

Engaging the Community

A portion of the proceeds from Ware’s photography sales during this exhibit will contribute to the Ferguson YMCA. The collaboration between the YMCA and ArtsvilleUSA is an invitation for the entire community to engage in this conversation about their shared future. With such enthusiasm and creativity abounding, Candler is on the verge of becoming a place that honors its past while embracing the promise of what’s to come.

Join the Journey

So, if you’re in the area, why not take a drive along those quirky roadways? As you meander through the blend of historic charm and bright possibilities, you may just find yourself inspired to join in the community’s exciting journey ahead.
