Dogwood Health Trust Announces Request for Proposals for Digital Opportunities Initiative
CityName – Dogwood Health Trust, a private foundation based in Asheville, North Carolina, has announced a new Digital Opportunities Initiative aimed at addressing the digital divide in Western North Carolina. The initiative is designed to make inclusion in the digital world easier and more relevant for individuals and families across the Qualla Boundary and Dogwood’s 18-county service region.
Webinar for Interested Applicants
Dogwood Health Trust is seeking proposals from collaborative nonprofit organizations starting from July 1 through August 9. To provide more information to interested parties, a webinar is scheduled for Wednesday, June 26 at 12 p.m. Interested organizations can register for the webinar here.
Addressing Internet Connectivity Challenges
Dr. Susan Mims, CEO of Dogwood Health Trust, highlighted the importance of internet connectivity, stating that around 20 percent of households are not connected to the internet, with many more having limited access. Factors such as cost, devices, and knowledge of using internet services pose challenges for residents in Western North Carolina.
“Access to an affordable internet connection and skills for utilizing it are essential for various aspects of modern living, including education, employment, healthcare, and more. Our goal is to join forces with our partners to help Western North Carolina overcome these obstacles,” said Dr. Mims.
Application Process and Funding
Dogwood Health Trust plans to work with up to 10 Digital Opportunity collaboratives, with up to five participating organizations per collaborative receiving grant funding during the initial 18-month grant cycle. Organized collaboratives will comprise community organizations and residents led by a designated “hub” organization. The funding can be used to enhance capacity, create or strengthen county or regional collaboratives, and implement identified strategies.
Sarah Thompson, VP of Economic Opportunity at Dogwood Health Trust, emphasized the importance of community involvement in developing solutions tailored to residents’ needs. Grantees selected for the program will receive coaching, technical assistance, and collaborative training to support their initiatives.
Application Details
The Digital Opportunities Initiative application will be accessible from July 1, 2024, with responses due by 5:00 p.m. on August 9, 2024. The award notifications will be made by mid-September, and the funds will be distributed in October 2024.
