Elevated Bacteria Levels Discovered in French Broad River: Public Cautioned to Refrain from Water Contact

In Asheville, alarming levels of bacteria have been detected in the French Broad River, according to recent findings. The environmental non-profit, Mountain True, is advising the public to abstain from swimming or engaging in other water-related activities in the river for the foreseeable future, suggesting a waiting period of approximately 24 to 48 hours, or at least until the apparent mudiness of the water recedes.

Details of the Testing Results

The water samples obtained have shown significantly high levels of bacterial strains that could include E. coli due to the phenomenon of re-circulating water. Registering a heightened health risk, the water presently poses potential hazards such as gastrointestinal issues, ear and sinus infections.

“We would advise folks, if possible, to find an alternate location for swimming,” advised Anna Alsobrook, the Watershed Science and Policy Manager at Mountain True. Alsobrook further stressed the importance of refraining from the water intake until the quality levels improve sufficiently, a period which could extend over a few days.

Tackling the Issue at Hand

In the city of Asheville, a campaign gravitating towards addressing rain runoff and safeguarding the French Broad River is currently in progress. The initiative has been identified as an urgent necessity given the current situation of elevated bacteria levels in the river.

In order to keep the residents and visitors informed regarding the progress, a comprehensively updated website, providing water quality reports every 15 minutes, has been made available to the public. The updated reports will help individuals make informed decisions about participating in water-related activities in the French Broad River.

Taking Precautions

In light of the urgent situation, the public has been strongly urged to pay heed to the advisory issued by Mountain True and other related health authorities. The call to steer clear of the French Broad River comes with a motivation to prevent undue illnesses and safety risks.

Alongside this, authorities have expressed a plea for ongoing cooperation and understanding as they persevere in their efforts to rectify the situation and ensure the safety and health of the residents of Asheville and its surroundings. Their aim is to restore the French Broad River to a condition where people may once again freely pursue water-based recreational activities.

The present focus remains on conducting frequent assessments of the water quality and collaborating with healthcare experts to decrease the risks presented by the prevalent bacterial contamination. The restoration of the river’s health is a significant priority for those entrusted with the stewardship of Asheville’s natural treasures.
