Asheville-based ENO Celebrates 25 Years of Hammock Innovation

Eagles Nest Outfitters is marking a quarter-century of success from its headquarters on Sweeten Creek Road. The company, known for its iconic ENO hammock, was established in 1999 by two brothers who started out selling their products from a minivan. Today, ENO hammocks are a common sight at festivals, campsites, parks, and local breweries.

The company’s spokesperson shared that people often refer to hammocking as “going ENO,” showcasing the brand’s popularity and influence in the outdoor community. She humorously described ENO as “the Kleenex of hammocks,” illustrating its widespread recognition.

From Humble Beginnings to Global Reach

With over 700 retailers across 18 countries, ENO’s journey began with Mast General Store and Diamond Brand Outdoors as its first retailers. These Asheville establishments have continued to support the brand, with Diamond Brand CEO emphasizing the remarkable success ENO has achieved over the years.

Innovative Roots

The Pinholster brothers started the business in Big Pine Key, Florida, selling hammocks at various events before relocating to Asheville in the early 2000s. Inspired by a hammock they encountered in New Zealand made from parachute-like nylon, they set out to create a portable, durable hammock for outdoor adventures.

The introduction of the patented knotless hammock suspension system made ENO hammocks even more user-friendly. The company’s signature hammocks are known for their compact design and vibrant colors, appealing to a diverse range of outdoor enthusiasts.

A Growing Community

ENOs have transcended the outdoor gear market, becoming a staple on college campuses and among hikers and nature lovers. The brand’s inclusive appeal has brought together individuals of all ages and backgrounds, fostering a vibrant community of outdoor enthusiasts.

Despite its international success, ENO remains rooted in Asheville, with 16 dedicated employees driving its continued growth and innovation. Co-owner of Black Dome Mountain Sports commended ENO for carving out a unique niche in the outdoor industry and captivating a loyal following.

Commemorating 25 Years

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, ENO launched a special edition DoubleNest hammock in collaboration with Asheville-based artist and musician Logan Hall. The new hammock, named Day and Night, features a custom design paying homage to the brand’s rich history and ties to music festivals.

Additionally, ENO is hosting a celebration with Mast General Store and unveiling a beer and hammock collaboration with Fonta Flora Brewery in Morganton. These events serve as a tribute to ENO’s enduring legacy and the loyal community that has supported its growth.

Looking Ahead

As ENO continues to innovate and expand its product offerings, the brand remains committed to fostering a sense of adventure and connection to the outdoors. With a strong foundation built over 25 years, ENO looks towards a future filled with new possibilities and exciting opportunities.
