Exciting Events Coming Up in Mars Hill!

Hey there, folks! If you’re in or around Mars Hill, get ready for a fantastic week ahead brimming with fun, community spirit, and opportunities to connect. From enlightening workshops to toe-tapping square dances, there’s something for everyone. Let’s dive into the details of what you can look forward to!

Monday, November 11 – A Community Rewoven Art Workshop

Start your week off creatively with the A Community Rewoven art workshop from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Blue Lounge in the Wren Student Union. This event, hosted by the Intro to Art Therapy class, invites community members to join in a heartfelt response to Hurricane Helene by creating individual pieces of art that will be combined into a large community quilt. Don’t worry if you don’t have any art experience; everyone is welcome to come and express themselves through art. It’s a wonderful chance to meet others from the area and contribute to something beautiful!

Tuesday, November 12 – True North Chapel Service & Holiday Potluck

On this day, take a moment to refresh your spirit during the True North Chapel Service at 11 a.m. in Broyhill Chapel. This weekly gathering is a serene space to reflect and gather your thoughts. Later in the afternoon from 5:30 to 8 p.m., join the Ramsey Center for Appalachian Studies for a delightful Holiday Potluck and Ornament-Making event at Bentley Fellowship Hall. Bring your favorite finger food to share, and if you play an instrument, feel free to bring that along too! There will be supplies available to create beautiful ornaments, plus live music from the local band Sourwood Ridge to keep the energy festive. All campus and community members are encouraged to come together for a memorable evening.

Wednesday, November 13 – Blood Drive & The Geometry of Privacy

Help save lives this November by donating blood at the Blood Drive happening from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Broyhill Chapel Parking Lot. Schedule your appointment online; every donation counts! Later that evening, join us at 7 p.m. in Belk Auditorium for a fascinating lecture titled The Geometry of Privacy. Presented as part of UNC Asheville’s Parsons Lecture series, renowned mathematician Francis Su will explore how geometry helps protect database privacy for major organizations like Apple and Google. This is a great opportunity to learn about the intersection of math and real-world applications.

Saturday, November 16 – Senior Visit Day

Attention high school seniors! From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., come to the Ferguson Math & Science Center and Wren Student Union for Senior Visit Day. This is your chance to see what being a Mars Hill student is all about. You’ll hear from current students, ask questions, and get an insider’s view of campus life. Family and friends are also welcome as they can chat with various campus representatives. Don’t miss out on this informative session!

Tuesday, November 19 – More Chapel and Jazz

The week continues with another uplifting True North Chapel Service at 11 a.m., followed by a breezy evening filled with smooth sounds at the Jazz Ensembles Concert starting at 7:30 p.m. in Moore Auditorium. Enjoy the lively atmosphere and some fantastic music by talented MHU students.

Thursday, November 21 – Join the Square Dance!

Get ready to kick up your heels at the Square Dance happening at 7 p.m. in The Loft, McConnell Hall. No experience? No problem! First-timers are warmly welcomed, and you can join in the fun with the help of caller Rodney Sutton, accompanied by live old-time music. Don’t miss the opportunity to learn some classic dance moves from MHU’s very own Bailey Mountain Cloggers!

Friday, November 22 – Music Department Holiday Concert

Wrap up your week with the annual Holiday Concert at Moore Auditorium, starting at 7:30 p.m. Enjoy the festive tunes, and don’t forget to join in singing the Hallelujah Chorus at the end! It’s a perfect way to kick off the holiday season.

Ongoing and Upcoming Exhibitions

Additionally, make sure to check out the art exhibition What Light Knows by Anna Helgeson at Weizenblatt Gallery, running through December 6. Looking ahead, artists can prepare for the upcoming exhibition Ghosts from Helene, which features art salvaged from Hurricane Helene with entries accepted until December 6, 2024.
