Youth Find Home Away from Home, ‘Family’ in Performing Arts Academy’s Spring Production

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Inside an industrial building in the Shiloh neighborhood of Asheville, cast members are gearing up for their upcoming production of “Little Shop of Horrors,” the spring showcase for the 22 mostly high school-aged participants at the Asheville Performing Arts Academy.

A Place of Belonging

The Asheville Performing Arts Academy, with over 20 years of experience in working with school-aged kids, has established itself not just as a training ground for young talent but as a second family and a home away from home.

A Shared Passion

For many cast members like Niah Hanson, who has been involved in theatre since the age of nine, the academy represents a sanctuary where their love for performing and making people laugh can flourish. The positive environment at the academy fosters a strong familial bond among the cast members.

Strength in Unity

Director Mary Katherine O’Donnell, a former student of the academy herself, emphasizes the close-knit relationships that form among the cast members, highlighting the support and encouragement they provide each other both on and off stage.

A Magical Experience

The camaraderie among the cast members adds an extra layer of magic to their performances, with each show becoming a testament to the talent, dedication, and genuine enjoyment they bring to the stage.

Life Lessons Through Theatre

Participating in the academy’s productions goes beyond simply honing performance skills; it also instills valuable life lessons such as responsibility, confidence, and teamwork. The experience of performing before a live audience offers a unique opportunity for growth and self-discovery.

A Creative Endeavor

From crafting elaborate puppets to perfecting their acting and singing skills, the cast members pour their hearts and souls into every aspect of the production, creating a truly immersive and unforgettable theatrical experience for themselves and the audience.

A Bittersweet Farewell

As the curtains draw to a close on each production, the cast members feel a mix of emotions—pride in their accomplishments, sadness at the end of a chapter, and gratitude for the memories and friendships forged during their time at the academy.
