The Gardner-Webb University baseball team showcased their prowess on Tuesday evening as they triumphed over Western Carolina University with a final score of 9-6 in a non-conference showdown.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs wasted no time getting on the board, with Alec Burns launching a solo home run to right field in the first inning. However, Western Carolina responded with a powerful four-run inning, including a single and a three-run homer, to take an early lead.
Gardner-Webb rallied in the top of the third inning, scoring four runs to reclaim the lead. Mark Black’s single to right center brought home two runs, while Burns and Peter Capobianco contributed with key hits to put the Runnin’ Bulldogs ahead 5-4.
In the sixth inning, Gardner-Webb further extended their lead with Ryan Kennell and Burns delivering clutch hits to drive in runs, and Matt Ilgenfritz doubling to tally two RBIs. The team displayed solid offensive prowess, amassing a total of 10 hits in the game.
While Western Carolina managed to add two runs in the bottom of the ninth, Gardner-Webb’s Devin Pressley stepped up to secure the victory for his team. Kazuya Kojima was credited with the win on the mound, while Spenser Hamblen took the loss for Western Carolina.
With this impressive win under their belt, Gardner-Webb will now turn their focus to their upcoming three-game series against the University of North Carolina Asheville, set to kick off on Friday, May 10 at 5:00 p.m.
