Asheville Prepares for the Colorful Goombay Festival Celebrating African American Culture from September 27-29, 2024

Asheville Gears Up for the Vibrant Goombay Festival

Asheville, known for its stunning landscapes and lively arts scene, is about to transform into a celebration of culture, community, and joy. The Goombay Festival, a beloved annual event, will return to downtown Asheville from September 27-29, 2024. This festival has a rich history dating back to 1982, created to honor and celebrate the diverse tapestry of the African diaspora and the city’s African American community.

A Celebration of Culture

The Goombay Festival is a wonderful opportunity for families and friends to come together, connect with one another, and immerse themselves in rich Black culture through art, food, and entertainment. Hosted by the YMI Cultural Center, this free festival draws in a crowd that often numbers in the thousands, all eager to enjoy the festivities that fill the air with laughter and music.

What’s Happening When

This year’s schedule is packed with exciting events! The festival kicks off at Pack Square on Friday with an Honor Ceremony starting at 5 PM, followed by fantastic tunes from talented DJs. Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • 5 PM – Honor Ceremony
  • 6 PM – DJ Doula
  • 7 PM – DJ Mark Majors
  • 8 PM – DJ Roselle
  • 9 PM – DJ Dayowolf

On Saturday, festivities continue at the YMI Cultural Center, kicking off with a lively Walking Procession at 11 AM. The day’s lineup includes:

  • 12 Noon – Music Workshop
  • 2 PM – Social Media Branding Workshop/Po’ Folk
  • 4 PM – Songwriters Workshop/Virtuous
  • 6 PM – Dinner Theater

Pack Square will be buzzing again on Saturday at 12 Noon with another Honor Ceremony, followed by:

  • 1 PM – ShaAir with Band
  • 2 PM – Theater Performance
  • 3 PM – DJ Doula
  • 4 PM – Po’ Folk
  • 5 PM – Street Sinatra
  • 6 PM – Kevin Spears
  • 7 PM – Virtuous
  • 8 PM – DJ Atreau
  • 9 PM – Blakkamoore

Sunday wraps up the festival at Pack Square with more exciting activities, starting with another Honor Ceremony at 11 AM.

  • 2 PM – Afolabi Adebanjo
  • 3 PM – Song Band
  • 5 PM – Honor Ceremony
