Buncombe County Sees Double the Number of Youth Gun Offenses in 2023

Concerns Over Rising Gun Offenses Among Youth in Buncombe County

According to recent data, Buncombe County in North Carolina has witnessed a troubling trend in youth gun offenses, with the number of incidents doubling from 2022 to 2023. This concerning rise in firearm-related incidents involving young individuals has raised red flags among community leaders and residents.

Facing the Reality of Gun Violence

The issue of gun violence, especially among youths, is not new to Buncombe County. The N.C. Department of Public Safety reports that firearms are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among children and young people in North Carolina. Last year, Governor Roy Cooper initiated the Secure All Firearms Effectively initiative to urge North Carolinians to responsibly store their firearms to prevent tragic incidents.

The prevalence of gun thefts in North Carolina has also contributed to the accessibility of firearms to young individuals. Shockingly, over 80% of teenage suicides by firearms in the United States involved guns that belonged to family members. Moreover, a national survey in 2021 revealed that more than half of loaded firearms at homes were left unlocked, posing a serious risk.

Gun Violence as a Public Health Issue

Gun violence is not just a criminal justice concern but also a significant public health problem. Recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that firearm-related deaths in the United States are alarmingly high, with over 50,000 fatalities reported in 2022. Tragically, more than half of these deaths were suicides.

In 2023 alone, Buncombe County recorded 51 deaths due to gun-related incidents, shedding light on the urgent need for measures to address this escalating issue. The CDC identifies specific demographic groups that are disproportionately affected by firearm violence, emphasizing the importance of addressing social and structural factors associated with gun-related incidents.

Efforts to Promote Gun Safety and Prevention

On June 7, Buncombe County government collaborated with various organizations to host a violence prevention event at Pack Square Park in commemoration of Gun Violence Awareness Day and North Carolina’s S.A.F.E. Week of Action. Attendees were urged to wear orange in solidarity for gun safety and violence prevention.

The spike in youth gun offenses from 10 to 30 cases from 2022 to 2023 has underscored the need for community-wide collaboration and proactive measures to safeguard the well-being of young individuals in the county. Initiatives like providing free gun safety locks and promoting responsible firearm ownership are essential components of tackling this critical issue.

Call for Action and Safe Storage Practices

Addressing gun violence demands a multifaceted approach that includes safe gun storage practices, public education, and strategic partnerships to reduce firearm-related injuries and deaths. Dr. April Zeoli, an expert in Health Management and Policy, highlights the effectiveness of Extreme Risk Protection Orders, known as “red flag” laws, in reducing the risk of suicide.

While some states have implemented red flag laws to restrict gun access for individuals deemed dangerous, North Carolina lacks such legislation. The absence of mandatory background checks for private sales and specific firearm storage laws in the state poses challenges in curbing gun-related incidents.

Practicing Safe Firearm Storage

To promote safe firearm storage, individuals can secure guns at home using locking devices such as cable locks, trigger locks, gun safes, lockboxes, or gun cases. Similarly, ensuring firearms in vehicles are securely locked with appropriate devices can prevent unauthorized access and misuse.

A comprehensive approach towards preventing gun violence necessitates a collective effort to prioritize violence prevention, promote responsible firearm ownership, and create a safer environment for all Buncombe County residents. Every citizen’s commitment to safe storage practices and responsible gun handling is crucial in mitigating the risks associated with firearms.

Conclusion: Upholding Safety and Addressing the Root Causes

As the number of youth gun offenses in Buncombe County continues to rise, the imperative to address gun violence as a public health crisis becomes even more pressing. By advocating for stringent gun safety measures, fostering community engagement, and supporting policy initiatives that prioritize violence prevention, Buncombe County aims to uphold the safety and well-being of its residents.

On November 5, the community’s voice and choices at the polls will shape the trajectory of gun violence prevention efforts and the overall health of the county. Together, through informed actions and responsible firearm practices, we can strive towards a safer and more secure Buncombe County.
