The Gardner-Webb University baseball team faced a tough loss in their second game of a three-game series against the University of North Carolina Asheville, with UNC Asheville securing a 12-4 victory on Saturday afternoon.
Gardner-Webb managed to get on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning. Ryan Kennell crossed home plate on a ground out from Alec Burns, giving Gardner-Webb an early 1-0 lead. Humberto Torres then followed up with a single that brought Lawson Knight home, extending the lead to 2-0.
UNC Asheville quickly responded to Gardner-Webb’s early lead, tying the game 2-2 in the bottom of the first inning with a sacrifice fly and a double. In the second inning, UNC Asheville took the lead with a single run before launching a grand slam to make it 7-2. The home team continued to pile on runs in the third inning, increasing their lead to 11-2 with a combination of a home run and a single.
Gardner-Webb managed to chip away at UNC Asheville’s lead in the top of the fourth inning. Peter Capobianco hit a triple to bring Nick Capozzi home, followed by a sacrifice fly from Max Smyley that scored Capobianco, narrowing the score to 11-4. However, UNC Asheville added one more run in the sixth inning to secure a 12-4 victory.
Colby Guy earned the win for UNC Asheville, while Parker Dixon took the loss for Gardner-Webb. Despite the defeat, both teams demonstrated their competitiveness throughout the game.
Gardner-Webb will have the opportunity to bounce back in the final game of the series against UNC Asheville on Sunday, May 12, at 12:00 p.m. Both teams will be looking to make a statement in the deciding game of the series.
