Asheville Addresses Homelessness Challenges Following Tropical Storm Helene

Asheville Ramps Up Efforts to Help the Unhoused Post-Storm

Asheville, N.C. – It’s been over a month since tropical storm Helene swept through the area, and now, an organization dedicated to ending homelessness is stepping up its game. Homeward Bound WNC is on a mission to make sure that those affected by the storm, especially individuals and families who find themselves without homes, are supported during this challenging time.

One of the successes is Roy, a full-time resident who has faced his own battles with homelessness. Allowing us a glimpse into his life, he shared his home, complete with a unique wall hanging of a white tiger that he found in downtown Asheville. As he pointed it out, we could see that his small bedroom is snug and creatively adorned with his favorite things—pictures of the legendary Steven Tyler and a feather symbolizing his Native American heritage.

“I have Cherokee Indian blood,” Roy proudly stated. After spending 20 years without a permanent home, he now enjoys the stability of a supportive housing facility. “People have been good to me here. I like it here, and I’m glad I’ve got it,” he expressed, a smile spreading across his face.

Facing the Aftermath

Roy is among 85 residents who have transitioned from chronic homelessness to a secure environment at Compass Point Village. However, the storm brought its fair share of challenges to the facility, cutting off power and water supplies. “It was a bit of a scary and uncertain time for our residents,” said Jessie Figueroa, the resource director of Homeward Bound.

Quick action was essential, and thankfully, the organization mobilized rapidly. Within hours, resident safety advisors and case managers were on the scene, assisting those in need. Luckily, most residents managed to weather the storm, but it wasn’t all good news. Sadly, at least two individuals within the unhoused community lost their lives due to the storm’s impact.

New Challenges Bring New Initiatives

Among the storm’s aftermath, there are now additional families facing the harsh reality of finding themselves without homes. “We do have 11 displaced families after tropical storm Helene,” Figueroa reported. So, the organization is working diligently to secure housing options for those affected, tapping into their landlord partnership program to facilitate shelter.

As temporary storm shelters begin to close, Homeward Bound WNC is preparing to expand its services. “The city of Asheville and our community are still learning what the future looks like,” Figueroa said, highlighting the ongoing challenge of understanding homelessness and support needs in the community.

Understanding and Community Support

Figueroa addressed a common misconception surrounding homelessness. “I think there’s a lot of the stigma often associated with what can cause people to become homeless,” she explained. The storm demonstrated how, in an instant, circumstances can shift dramatically. “I think if there’s anything this storm has done, it’s shown us how in the blink of an eye things can change.”

Roy’s journey is a testament to that notion. He relayed, “Well, it’s a roof over my head and a good bed to sleep in.” It’s clear that for many like Roy, the change brought about by the storms can sometimes lead to a brighter future.

Help is Here

In an effort to assist with recovery initiatives, Homeward Bound WNC has established a relief fund for donations. The organization encourages community members to come together and support these essential services as they navigate this difficult period.

As Asheville faces the ongoing impacts of Helene, it’s heartening to see organizations stepping up to make a difference in the lives of those affected. With a little community spirit and understanding, countless lives can be positively impacted in this lovely city.
