Highland Brewing, the craft beer brewery that set the tone for Asheville’s robust beverage industry, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. In 1994, Oscar Wong, a Chinese-Jamaican immigrant, started brewing beer in the basement of Barley’s pub in downtown Asheville. What began as a small vision has now grown into a significant operation.
Since its humble beginnings, Highland Brewing has expanded from a team of three to 105 employees, with two taprooms in Asheville. Leah Wong Ashburn, Wong’s daughter, joined the brewery in 2011 and now serves as CEO. The brewery has played a vital role in shaping Asheville’s brewing industry, with over 35 breweries now in the city.
To commemorate their 30 years in business, Highland Brewing will host anniversary events and release new and throwback beers. The brewery has also made sustainable efforts, such as installing a rooftop solar panel system and using repurposed wood in their event center.
Highland Brewing remains focused on being a local, family-owned business and aims to deepen its presence in the states it serves. Embracing community and sustainability, the brewery continues to be an integral part of Asheville’s culture and economy.
