Asheville Encourages Community Spirit with Holiday Gift Drive for Nursing Home Residents

Asheville Gears Up for a Heartwarming Holiday Season

As we step into the chill of December in Asheville, the air is undeniably brisk, with temperatures hovering around 42°F in the morning but expected to dip into the thirties as the day progresses. Winds will be breezy, gusting over 40 mph at times, so make sure to bundle up if you’re heading out. The night will be even colder, hitting lows of around 15°F—so warm clothing is definitely in order!

A Warm Call to Action

In the spirit of the season, the community is coming together to spread some warmth and cheer, particularly for those who could use a bit of extra kindness. The Land of Sky Ombudsman program is rolling out a wonderful initiative to collect holiday gifts for local long-term care facilities in Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, and Transylvania counties. This heartfelt effort runs through December 12, and it’s a chance for all of us to brighten the holidays for nursing home residents.

Gift Ideas That Make a Difference

You might wonder what kind of gifts you can bring. There are plenty of options that can bring joy to the residents. Some thoughtful donations include:

  • Winter accessories: Hats, gloves, and scarves will help keep everyone cozy.
  • Toys: Infant baby dolls and their accessories can bring smiles to those who enjoy a little nostalgia.
  • Craft supplies: Non-toxic paints, brushes, and coloring books encourage creativity among residents.
  • Personal care items: Luxurious essentials like body wash, shampoo, and lotion can offer a sense of pampering.
  • Comfort gifts: Throw blankets and non-skid socks are perfect for snuggling up in the winter months.
  • Fun activities: Large print word search books and adult coloring books provide engaging pastimes.
  • Jewelry: Women’s costume jewelry can add a little sparkle to their days.

These items can really make a difference in someone’s day, so consider making a contribution!

Where and When to Donate

If you’re looking to donate, it’s easy! Just drop off your gifts at the Land of Sky located at 339 New Leicester Highway in Asheville. The collection hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the weekdays. And if you have any questions or need further information, don’t hesitate to reach out to them at 828-251-7433 or send an email to cori@landofsky.org.

Let’s Make the Holidays Special

As we cozy up in our warmest sweaters and enjoy the holiday spirit, let’s remember those who might not have the same comforts. Every little bit helps, and together, we can bring some joyful moments to those in long-term care facilities.

So, as the winds whip around us and the temperatures drop, let’s gather our winter clothes, toys, and heartfelt gifts to make this season brighter for someone else. Happy holidays to all, and let’s spread some warmth in our beautiful Asheville community!
