Asheville is buzzing with activity as the city prepares for the holiday season while recovering from the recent impacts of Tropical Storm Helene. With partly cloudy skies and a slight chance of rain on the horizon, locals are proving that resilience is truly part of the Asheville spirit.
One of the most beloved attractions in Asheville, Biltmore Estate, is set to reopen its doors on November 2, kicking off its enchanting Christmas at Biltmore celebration. After temporarily closing to assess damage caused by the storm, the estate has made great strides in repairing affected areas. Staff members have been working hard to ensure it’s fully decorated and ready for visitors’ delight as they step into a winter wonderland.
This year marks over 125 years of history and hospitality at Biltmore, and despite the challenges faced, the estate remains a beacon of hope and community spirit. As you stroll through the beautifully adorned halls of this magnificent mansion, you’ll feel the warmth of the holiday season wrapping around you. Attractions and restaurants will be open, and accommodations are ready to welcome you for an overnight stay, although some outdoor trails are still undergoing cleanup.
In the wake of Tropical Storm Helene, the Asheville Fire Department teamed up with the Diana Wortham Theatre staff to transform the venue into a distribution center for those in need. They have been providing essentials like potable water, non-perishable food, clothing, and personal care items to support the community during these trying times.
Adding to the efforts, Asheville-native musician Tyler Ramsey has launched a heartwarming initiative with his new album “Cardinals at the Window.” Available for just $10 as a digital download, all proceeds from the album are going directly to flood relief efforts in Western North Carolina. Ramsey, who grew up in the region, expressed his dedication to the community he loves so dearly, saying, “The rivers and springs of our home have been the lifeblood of our communities for generations.”
As we embrace the season of giving, local markets are bustling with activity. The River Arts District Farmers Market has found a new home at the Stein Mart parking lot on Merrimon Ave, operating every Wednesday from 3-6 p.m. Similarly, the North Asheville Tailgate Market has also moved to the same location and will open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. The Asheville City Market, on the other hand, has settled back into its permanent spot at 52 N Market St., welcoming visitors each Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Although some markets have faced temporary closures due to storm-related impacts, the essential East Asheville Tailgate Market continues to thrive every Friday from 1-4 p.m., while other markets like West Asheville and Enka-Candler remain open at their usual locations. This vibrant marketplace not only supports local farmers but also provides SNAP benefits, ensuring everyone has access to fresh produce.
As Asheville gears up for the holiday festivities, excitement is palpable. From the opening of Biltmore’s Christmas celebration to ongoing community initiatives supporting flood relief, the spirit of togetherness shines brightly. Whether you’re a long-time resident or a visitor, there’s an undeniable sense of hope and connection flowing through the streets of Asheville as we step into this joyous season of giving.
So, mark your calendars and get ready to enjoy all that Asheville has to offer this holiday season. With an array of activities, festivals, and markets, let’s cherish our community and celebrate the resilience that makes Asheville truly special.
