Asheville: New and Improved Hominy Creek Greenway Trail Reopens after Closure, Volunteer Work Day

After several weeks of closure for construction and improvements to a Hominy Creek Greenway trail that had a tendency to flood, the trailhead is back open. A ribbon-cutting and volunteer workday hosted by Friends of Hominy Creek Greenway Sunday, April 14, put the finishing touches on the new and improved trail!

Improvements and Reopening

After weeks of hard work, a popular Asheville trailhead is back open. The previously closed trail had a tendency to flood, but those issues are now fixed thanks to the recent construction. A ribbon-cutting on Sunday, April 14, and reopening was part of the public workday at Hominy Creek Greenway, hosted by Friends of Hominy Creek Greenway nonprofit.

Volunteer Involvement

People weren’t just there to celebrate; instead, volunteers spent the day removing invasive plants near the trail and replacing them with native ones. The hope is to enhance the greenway’s sustainability so people can enjoy the trails for years to come.

Community Well-being

“As we see our county lose green space, having access to them for our community is important for mental health; it’s important for physical health,” said Jack Igelman, a Friends of Hominy Creek Greenway trustee. “We want to make these spaces accessible to everyone, and so I think this kind of work is in that spirit.”
