Asheville, North Carolina, is known for its stunning fall foliage and vibrant music scene, but recently, the city found itself in the path of Hurricane Helene, bringing some unexpected challenges for both residents and travelers. One such story is of Sarah Bilovesick, who had big plans to visit Asheville, catch a concert at the popular venue Rabbit Rabbit, and spend time with her mother. Little did she know, the adventure would take an unexpected turn.
Like many who travel, Sarah was excited for her trip. She and her fiancé booked flights from Las Vegas, where they live, to enjoy the beautiful fall colors of Western North Carolina. Rabbit Rabbit, a favorite spot for music lovers, was hosting a concert they were thrilled to attend. Everything was set for a perfect getaway—until Hurricane Helene made its presence known, causing havoc and forcing cancellations.
“I was a wreck when all of this was happening,” Sarah shared. She was understandably concerned about the storm’s impact and the state of the roads leading to her mother’s house. With safety in mind, she questioned whether it was wise to travel at all, fearing she might get in the way of emergency response crews.
Sarah expected American Airlines, the airline she chose for her trip, to cancel her flights since the area was under a state of emergency. However, to her surprise, her flight remained scheduled. “Why on earth would you fly tourists to an area that has declared a state of emergency after a natural disaster?” she wondered. This unexpected decision added another layer of frustration to an already stressful situation.
Having purchased nonrefundable tickets, which cost nearly $800 for both Sarah and her fiancé, she faced the dilemma of either flying into a potentially dangerous situation or forfeiting her money. After reaching out to American Airlines, she was offered a voucher for a future flight instead of a refund, which left her feeling less than satisfied. “This is the first flight I booked with American Airlines in probably five to 10 years. I just don’t use that airline. So I don’t want a credit,” she explained.
As the dust began to settle, Sarah had an idea. Rather than waiting to see if conditions improved for her original trip, she decided to change her approach. Instead of flying to Asheville, her mother would make the trip to Las Vegas in December for a visit. “I hope to have more luck that way,” she said, sounding optimistic about the change in plans.
In a twist of fate, American Airlines later stepped in to offer her a full refund as a goodwill gesture. This unexpected turn of events was a relief for Sarah, who had been so stressed about the uncertainty of her travel plans. Such gestures, especially in times of distress, can go a long way toward rebuilding trust with customers.
While Sarah’s story focuses on travel woes, it is essential to recognize the broader picture of how communities like Asheville respond to natural disasters. With hurricane preparedness measures in place, the city is rallying resources and aid to assist residents and ensure safety throughout the storm. Local organizations are stepping up, providing essential supplies and working to support those who are impacted.
Hurricane Helene serves as a reminder of nature’s unpredictable behavior and the importance of community solidarity in the face of adversity. As recovery efforts begin, and travelers adjust plans amid ongoing challenges, the spirit of Asheville and its gorgeous surroundings continue to shine through.
So, as the saying goes, let’s hope that saying “rabbit” twice brings us all a little extra luck—especially those in Asheville looking to bounce back from this unwelcome encounter with Hurricane Helene.
