Community Unites for Hurricane Helene Relief in the Piedmont Triad

As we look around Piedmont Triad, there’s a sense of resilience in the air. The recent bout with Hurricane Helene has tested our community, but it has also brought out the best in us. Organizations and non-profits across the region have rolled up their sleeves and jumped into action to support those affected by the devastating storm. Every day, more donations pour in, proving that when times are tough, neighbors help neighbors.

Big Donations Making a Difference

Just today, Food Lion made headlines by donating nearly four million dollars to Hurricane Helene relief efforts. This massive contribution is just one example of how major corporations are stepping up to the plate. Other well-known companies, including USAA, Target, and PepsiCo, have also joined the fight with donations amounting to millions. According to Governor Cooper, these efforts have helped raise over 14 million dollars for victims in a collaborative effort that spans more than two dozen organizations.

The Road to Recovery

Despite these incredible efforts, many victims still find themselves in need of everyday essentials. Kathy Soule, a dedicated staff member from Asheville-based non-profit Elben Charities, shared her thoughts on the situation: “We are moving forward, but it is going to be a long haul. It’s not something we’re going to fix in the next 3 months, 6 months; it could be a year to two years to get everybody back on their feet again.”

Bringing Joy During the Holidays

With the holiday season fast approaching, organizations like Elben Charities are making plans to spread a little cheer, even in challenging times. “We’ve always had the Saint Nicholas project, where we create a toy store for low-income families to shop for free for their children for the holidays,” Soule said. This initiative is set to bring smiles to many faces, ensuring that even in the wake of disaster, joy can still shine through.

How You Can Help

If you’re feeling inspired and want to get involved, there are many ways you can contribute. Whether it’s donating money, goods, or time, every little bit helps. Many organizations are actively seeking donations and volunteers to aid in ongoing relief efforts. Those interested in making a positive impact on the lives of Helene victims can find more information through various community channels.

A Stronger Community Ahead

As we come together to support one another during this challenging time, it’s clear that the spirit of the Piedmont Triad community is unbreakable. Each and every contribution, no matter how small, plays a vital role in helping our neighbors rebuild their lives. So let’s continue to stand together and show that love, compassion, and community spirit can conquer even the toughest obstacles.
