Buncombe County Focuses on Hurricane Recovery as Shelter Consolidation Begins
Buncombe County, N.C., is taking important steps to help those affected by recent hurricanes. Starting this Saturday, November 9, the county will be consolidating its emergency shelters from two locations down to just one. Currently, there are shelters operating at the WNC Agricultural Center and the former Gold’s Gym on Hendersonville Road. However, all 164 storm victims currently housed in these shelters will be moved to the Gold’s Gym location.
Local officials have assured residents that the transition will be supported by the American Red Cross. This collaborative effort aims to make the process as smooth as possible for everyone involved. The American Red Cross has experience in emergency situations and will be providing assistance throughout this transition.
FEMA Steps In to Aid Recovery Efforts
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is also playing a critical role in assisting individuals affected by the hurricane. They have deployed what they call a “Mass Care Team” to address the unique needs of those still in shelters. This team will help facilitate the process of finding more permanent housing options and assist in the transition to recovery.
As county manager Avril Pinder pointed out, many of the individuals remaining in shelters were previously unhoused. Unfortunately, many do not have a place to return to, and FEMA is currently working hard on the permitting process to set up mobile homes or travel trailers for those who need them. Pinder emphasized the importance of finding effective solutions, stating, “The majority of the folks still in our shelters, though, were previously unhoused and so they don’t have a home to go back to or a home that FEMA can help.”
Progress in Mobile Home Installation
In response to this alarming situation, Buncombe County is actively working to provide additional housing options. Pinder indicated that the county is hopeful to install three new mobile homes by the end of next week. This effort will help those in need transition from shelters to a more stable living situation.
Caring members of the community have also stepped forward to support hurricane victims. Local initiatives such as Cabins 4 Christ have united community and faith-based efforts to offer new beginnings for those affected by the hurricane. Through these programs, displaced families may find not only shelter but a renewed sense of hope as they work towards rebuilding their lives.
Reallocation of Funds for Hurricane Recovery
On another front, Buncombe County has also earmarked $3.1 million in ARPA funds specifically for hurricane recovery efforts. This funding will further support individuals in their journey toward recovery, and officials are optimistic that these resources will speed up the process of transitioning those in shelters into more permanent housing.
The local government remains committed to supporting its communities in navigating through these difficult times. Every effort is being made to connect storm victims with the necessary resources for their recovery. It’s a time of uncertainty for many in Buncombe County, but the collaboration among various organizations and community members brings hope to those who need it most.
Looking Ahead
As Buncombe County consolidates its emergency shelters and works with FEMA and other local organizations, the focus remains on ensuring that every individual and family gets the support they need. As we enter into this next phase of recovery, it’s essential for residents to keep informed about available resources and stay connected with their local officials.
Despite the challenges, there is a collective strength in Buncombe County as everyone rallies together to help one another during this recovery phase. Keeping spirits high and supporting one another can make all the difference.
