Four-mile stretch of Interstate 40 in Asheville to be Closed for the Weekend

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – A busy section of Interstate 40 will be closed for the weekend, due to continued bridge work by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT).

The NCDOT announced today that a four-mile stretch on Interstate 40 will be closed to traffic from 8 p.m. on August 9th through to 6 a.m. on August 12th. The closure will affect I-40 East from the cross-link of I-240 East/I-26 West (Exit 46B) extending to Hendersonville Road (Exit 50). The closure is to allow for works on the eastbound bridge spanning Hominy Creek and Hominy Creek Road.

Details of Closing and Detour

The primary detour method will be channeled through I-240 East. Digital signs have been distributed across the area to notify the public of the impending closure and to suggest the use of the alternative route. The ramp from I-26 West to I-40 East will be equally closed; motorists will be alerted to continue towards I-240 East. Similarly, the Brevard Road on-ramp to I-40 East will be out of bounds with traffic redirected towards the I-240 East detour route.

Scope of the Weekend Operation

The planned operations for the weekend include hydro-demolition of aged concrete plus the addition of a re-modified concrete. This effort will provide a new riding surface and pave the approaching areas to the bridge. The operations are part of a $27.9 million interstate rehabilitation project including roadway resurfacing and bridge overlays. The project is expected to rectify spalling concrete on bridge substructure components, notably the piers, and improve the riding surface of the four I-40 bridges over Hominy Creek and another two over the French Broad River. Completion of the project is slated for the Spring of 2026.

Stay Connected

For real-time travel updates, residents and motorists are encouraged to visit DriveNC.gov or check on NCDOT’s official social media pages. Attentions are reminded to adhere to the changes in travel plans this weekend and consider alternative routes to avoid traffic congestion.
