Johnson City Comes Together to Support Hurricane Helene Recovery

In the heart of Johnson City, Tennessee, a beautiful story of community spirit is unfolding as residents and businesses join forces to help those affected by Hurricane Helene. A local pharmacy, Mooney’s Pharmacy, is spearheading an inspiring initiative called “Appalachians Uniting Appalachia: Watch Us Rise”, and it all started with a simple family moment.

The Spark of an Idea

Chris Lopez, the owner of Mooney’s, shared how the idea was born. “My wife and I were watching our three wonderful children play,” he recalled. “We looked at each other and realized how many children have lost everything — maybe even their parents — and don’t even have a toy to distract them.” This heartwarming moment set off a chain reaction of generosity and compassion.

The very next day, with a heartfelt message to his employees, Lopez began organizing a toy drive intended to bring joy and comfort to kids in need. But the initiative quickly grew beyond his expectations. “The very next day, we were contacted by the ETSU College of Pharmacy, and they asked if they could house the drive here. I said, ‘Absolutely, that’s no problem,’” Lopez explained. This collaboration transformed the toy drive into a larger community effort.

Making a Difference

On Sunday, a convoy is set to take a 38-foot trailer filled with donations down to Black Mountain, North Carolina. While Mooney’s is playing a pivotal role in this charitable event, Lopez emphasizes that it’s not about the pharmacy receiving praise. “It’s not about taking credit for anything,” he said. “It’s about just helping these people that are suffering.”

Lopez is not only committed to providing immediate assistance but sees this as a chance to embody the values instilled in him by the pharmacy’s original owner, Tom Mooney. “The entire reason this store has stood for 40 years is because he ran this store on faith, family, and community,” Lopez said, reflecting on the legacy of care and compassion that has defined Mooney’s Pharmacy.

A Legacy of Generosity

He added, “As long as these doors are open, I promise that this store will continue to be run based on the same principles of faith, family, and community. I hope that in 40 years, I can pass it on to someone else and tell them the same thing.” This heartfelt commitment ensures that the legacy of support and unity continues for future generations in the community.

Expanding the Reach

The drive to assist doesn’t stop in North Carolina. Plans are already underway for additional clinics and donation efforts in Tennessee and Virginia. Lopez believes that by working together, they can bring much-needed help to many more people impacted by the hurricane.

Mooney’s Pharmacy will continue to accept donations beyond the weekend trip, so the community can keep contributing to this vital effort. It’s incredible to see how one act of kindness can inspire others to give back and foster a spirit of collaboration, especially in tough times.

What You Can Do

If you’re inspired by this story and looking to help, consider reaching out to local organizations or taking part in community drives. Every little bit counts, whether it’s a toy for a child, supplies for families, or simply spreading the word. Together, we can help make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.

As the residents of Johnson City rally together to support their neighbors in need, it serves as a poignant reminder of the strength that comes from community and the impact of kindness during challenging times.
