The unofficial coda to summer, the much-anticipated Labor Day weekend, is fast approaching. As families prepare to celebrate with backyard barbeques, excursions to swimming pools, and trips to camping sites, they should take note of the weather forecast for the weekend. An interesting blend of radiant sunshine and refreshing showers is expected to grace the region.
The prevailing weather conditions continue to play the observer’s paradox; oftentimes enhancing our outdoor plans with melodious accompaniment of drizzles or adding an unexpected twister in the tale of otherwise perfectly laid plans.
Our chief meteorologist has predicted the likelihood of rain from Friday through Sunday, although they assure that there won’t be any complete washouts. The prediction calls for soaking showers or occasional thundershowers, serving both as a cool respite for the revelers and a savior for the parched expanses of the region.
With denizens having experienced a noticeably dry summer this year, the predictions of rain might not unnerve many. This season, several areas in the region have suffered from a rainfall deficit; with even normally damp locales such as Lake Toxaway and Brevard witnessing a 5-8 inches shortfall from the average summer rainfall.
Contrastingly, the Asheville Regional Airport, with a surplus of 1.67 inches of rainfall, appears to swim against the tide. However, it is but one among the few odd ones out. A prolonged dry spell at the end of August might hamper the fall foliage, with leaves potentially falling before they could change color in the forthcoming months.
The rainfall expected across the region this weekend might significantly vary, however, in general, some areas could witness up to a couple of inches by Labor Day.
While a shower-soaked Labor Day might seem a bit out of place, remember that it’s not always about the weather. The companionship, the laughter, the communal bonding around a blazing fire or a dripping barbeque – it’s these indelible moments that define our Labor Day celebrations.
So, this weekend, whether you’re reveling under the warm sun or finding respite under an umbrella, remember to embrace the weather and reinforce the essence of the day – a salute to the indefatigable working class of our nation.
