This article discusses the development of large apartment complexes in Asheville’s River Arts District (RAD), notably The Wyre, a 245-unit complex with space for commercial and retail. The project is seen as a litmus test for residential living in the area. Other developments in the RAD and South Asheville are also underway, aiming to address the housing shortage and meet the demand for residential units. Mountain Housing Opportunities (MHO) is actively involved in constructing affordable housing projects to combat the housing crisis in the region. Despite the increase in market-rate developments, there is still a pressing need for more affordable housing options as over 50% of renters in Buncombe County struggle to afford their housing. Looking ahead, the development of large apartment complexes signals a significant shift in Asheville’s real estate landscape, reflecting the growing demand for housing in the area.
