Leaf Collection Starts Today in Asheville as Fall Season Arrives

Leaf Collection Kicks Off in Asheville!

Asheville is buzzing with the sounds of fall! Starting today, October 28, the city’s sanitation crews are rolling up their sleeves and getting ready to tackle those fallen leaves. Homeowners and residents can now put out their leaves in paper bags or personal containers clearly marked as “yard waste.” It’s all part of Asheville’s efforts to keep our beautiful city clean while helping our environment.

Why the Early Notice?

As the leaves begin to blanket our streets and yards, the city is encouraging everyone to hold off as long as possible before setting them out for collection. Why wait? Well, this little adjustment helps make the process of removing storm debris much smoother and more efficient. Plus, there’s a fantastic option for composting!

Don’t Throw Those Leaves Away!

Instead of simply bagging them up, why not consider composting your leaves? This is not just a kinder choice for the planet, but it also enriches your garden. One neat way to compost is by using a mulching mower. Just run over those leaves, and—voilà!—they can compost right into your lawn, naturally feeding the soil.

If that idea doesn’t quite fit your style, you can also create a compost pile in your backyard. Just rake those leaves into a designated spot, and give it some time. Soon, you will have rich, dark compost that works wonders as a soil additive for your gardening needs!

Bi-Weekly Collection Schedule

When you are ready to set your leaves out, remember that the city will collect them on a bi-weekly schedule. So, here’s a quick checklist to ensure you’re following the guidelines:

  • No storm debris will be collected—only leaves and small sticks.
  • Place your leaf bags or containers marked as “brush” by the street no later than 7 a.m. on Monday of your collection week.
  • Use only reusable containers or biodegradable paper yard bags—plastic bags are a no-go.
  • Make sure not to tie bags or put lids on those containers—keep it simple!
  • No mixing trash with those bagged leaves, please.
  • If you’re using a container, don’t forget to write “yard waste” on it for easy identification.

Embrace the Fall Spirit!

With these guidelines in mind, let’s embrace the gorgeous fall season together! Amidst the crunch of leaves underfoot and the crisp autumn air, you can contribute to keeping Asheville as stunning as ever. Whether you choose to compost your leaves or set them out for collection, every little effort helps.

So grab that rake, fire up those mulching mowers, and let’s make the most of this season! Happy leaf collection day, Asheville!
