Celebrating Local Heroes in Asheville: Land of Sky Regional Council’s Annual Awards
This past December in Asheville, the Land of Sky Regional Council held its annual awards ceremony during the Board of Delegates Meeting, and what a celebration it was! The Council honored extraordinary individuals and local organizations that have significantly contributed to our community, especially following the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene. With awards like the Robert G. Parrish, Sr. Intergovernmental Relations Award, the Charles H. Campbell Regional Leadership Award, and the Robert E. Shepherd Excellence in Local Government Award, it was a wonderful night recognizing dedication, commitment, and heroism.
Honoring Intergovernmental Champions
First up was the Robert G. Parrish, Sr. Intergovernmental Relations Award, named after the first Mayor of Fletcher and long-time Chairman of the Council, it honors those who excel in fostering cooperation between governing bodies. This year, the award went to Matthew Wechtel, the Chairman of the Madison County Board of Commissioners. His work during the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, particularly in establishing a cooperative water system between Madison County and Weaverville, made a lasting impact in our region. Isn’t that the kind of leadership we need?
Celebrating Regional Leadership
Next, the Council presented the Charles H. Campbell Regional Leadership Award to Brownie Newman, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners Chairman. Over his impressive 21-year career, including the last 8 years focused on leading our region’s largest county, his commitment to bettering the community has truly stood out. It’s inspiring to know we have leaders like him steering our ship!
Outstanding Local Government Service
Then came the Robert E. Shepherd Excellence in Local Government Award, which recognized Debra D. Campbell, the City Manager of Asheville. Her steadfast dedication during the recovery efforts from Hurricane Helene, especially in reviving the city’s water system, speaks volumes about her commitment. It feels comforting to have professionals like her working tirelessly for the people of Asheville.
Acknowledging Extraordinary Service
A total of fourteen extraordinary public service awards were given this year to local officials who have gone above and beyond. Some notable recipients included Abigail Norton, the Town of Hot Springs Mayor for her resilient leadership in rebuilding; Sandra Kilgore, who advocated for unity in our region; and David McNeill, Assistant Transylvania County Manager, who provided strong oversight through emergency services during the disaster. Their work continued to shine through the many challenges faced.
The Unsung Heroes Recognized
In a heartfelt moment, the Council honored two individuals with the Land of Sky Hero Award. Both Battalion Chief Tony Ray Garrison and Major Michelle Lynn Elliott Quintero were recognized posthumously for their bravery and unwavering commitment to serving the community. Their sacrifices during the hurricane were a touching reminder of the incredible spirit of our local heroes.
Radio Stations Step Up
Last but not least, the role of local radio stations was highlighted as they acted as vital lifelines during and after Hurricane Helene. With limited internet access post-storm, these stations provided crucial updates and resources that aided countless residents in need. The Council proudly recognized stations such as iHeart Media Asheville, Blue Ridge Public Radio, and several others for their swift response and dedication to keeping the community informed.
A Special Recognition for Jon Beck
In a moment of personal achievement, Jon Beck, an instrumental member of the Land of Sky Regional Council, was honored with the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine. This award, the highest honor granted by the Governor of North Carolina, celebrates individuals who excel in community service. With over 30 years in Geographic Information Systems and planning, Jon’s contributions have transformed how local governments access and use crucial data.
The Land of Sky Regional Council’s Annual Awards ceremony showcased the heart and resilience of our community, honoring those who dedicate their lives to the service of others. As we look forward to what lies ahead in Asheville and the surrounding area, it is reassuring to see such inspiring leaders and heroes making our region a better, safer, and supportive place to call home.
