Local Teen Killed, 2 Charlotte Students in Critical Condition After Car Crash

Asheville, N.C. – April 7, 2024

Two individuals lost their lives, including a local teenager, and two Charlotte high school students are in critical condition after a tragic single-vehicle car crash in Asheville on Saturday night, as reported by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The victims were identified as Sophie Gordon, 16, from Charlotte, and Robert Fox, 19, from Illinois.

Victims Identified

Sophie Gordon, a junior at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, was among those who tragically lost their lives in the crash. Additionally, two juniors from Charlotte Catholic High School are currently in the Intensive Care Unit at Mission Hospital in Asheville, following the incident.

Details of the Crash

According to the Highway Patrol, the fatal wreck occurred around 11:30 p.m. along Interstate 40. Initial reports suggest that the driver attempted to take Exit 53B off-ramp at a high rate of speed, causing the vehicle to lose control, veer off the left side of the roadway, and collide with a tree.

Of the six individuals in the vehicle at the time of the crash, only the driver and one additional passenger sustained minor injuries. The driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, and the other passenger were the sole survivors with minor injuries, while the rest faced more severe outcomes.

As the investigation into the incident continues, authorities have refrained from releasing further details or pressing any charges related to the crash. The precise circumstances leading up to the tragic event are still under scrutiny as the community mourns the loss of the young lives and prays for the recovery of those fighting for their lives.
