Extensive Renovation Project to Commence at Lucy S. Herring Elementary School

Asheville, NC – March 6, 2024

Asheville City Schools has announced an ambitious plan to initiate a comprehensive renovation project at Lucy S. Herring Elementary School, a cornerstone institution in the district known for providing a nurturing learning environment for young scholars. The upcoming construction is slated to begin in mid-June 2024 and is projected to conclude by fall 2025, bringing significant enhancements to the school’s infrastructure.

Renovation Scope and Impact

The decision to undertake this renovation was prompted by the need to modernize the more than four-decade-old building, which requires substantial upgrades across various areas. The proposed renovations include installing new heating and cooling systems, revamping bathrooms, updating mechanical systems, replacing the ceiling and roof, upgrading windows, and enhancing the kitchen facilities. Additionally, a three-tiered security vestibule will be implemented to bolster safety measures at the school.

These modifications will not only transform the physical spaces within the school but also impact critical areas such as the playground, gym, cafeteria, and other essential facilities. The renovation process is expected to disrupt normal activities, with teachers relocating classrooms multiple times throughout the school year, specialists facing displacement, and limited access to the media center for an extended period.

Temporary Relocation

To ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff during the renovation period, Asheville City Schools has decided to relocate students from Lucy S. Herring Elementary to the district’s other elementary schools for the 2024-2025 academic year. This strategic move aims to mitigate potential disruptions and health hazards posed by the construction work and facilitate a conducive learning environment for all individuals involved.

The district is actively engaging with parents to facilitate tours of alternative elementary schools to aid in decision-making for the upcoming academic year. Efforts are being made to accommodate siblings in the same school and provide support to staff members in transitioning to new locations for the duration of the renovation project.

Educational Continuity and Communication

Recognizing the challenges posed by the temporary relocation, Asheville City Schools is committed to minimizing disruptions and ensuring a smooth transition for students, families, and faculty members. Regular updates will be provided to stakeholders throughout the construction process, and proactive measures will be taken to address any concerns or issues that may arise.
