Asheville: Mars Hill University Breaks Ground for Campus Center

On a recent sunny day in Asheville, Mars Hill University hosted a momentous event on the Lunsford Commons – the formal groundbreaking of a new campus center. This groundbreaking marks the beginning of a new chapter for the university, as it embarks on a $28 million project to enhance student life and campus facilities.

New Campus Center Features

The centrally-located campus center will boast a range of amenities designed to cater to the needs of students. Among its highlights are student activity spaces, a fitness center, and areas for gaming and dining. Additionally, the campus center will house various student-centric offices, including the admissions office, Cothran Center for Career Readiness, chaplain’s office, student life, and student organizations.

Renovating and expanding Blackwell Hall, the former administration building, forms a key part of the construction process. Improving outdoor spaces with enhanced lighting adjacent to the center will also be part of the endeavor.

Together We Rise Capital Campaign

The as-yet-unnamed campus center stands as the primary focus of the Together We Rise Capital campaign, which commenced in January 2021. President Tony Floyd extended his gratitude to all those present at the groundbreaking ceremony. He acknowledged the crucial role played by former President Dan Lunsford, who initiated discussions about the campus center during his tenure. Floyd also expressed appreciation to trustees, faculty, staff, and members of the campaign committee for their support.

Greta Byrd, the vice president for advancement, recognized the generosity of the donors who have contributed to the campus center project. She described the center as a space that embodies the university’s spirit and essence.

Commitment to Student Experience

Trustee Wayne Higgins, chair of the Together We Rise campaign committee, emphasized that the campus center mirrors the university’s dedication to its students. He concluded the ceremony with a prayer, expressing hope that the new building would uphold Mars Hill University’s mission and commitment to knowledge.

Student Groundbreaking

In a symbolic gesture, a group of students used ceremonial shovels to break ground at the construction site, highlighting the campus center’s significance in enhancing the student experience.
