MILLS RIVER HAS A NEW TOWN MANAGER

Following a nationwide search, the Mills River Town Council has chosen an experienced local government executive as its new town manager. Matthew McKirahan assumes the role on July 29.

Selection Process

McKirahan, currently organizational performance director for the Village of Pinehurst, was selected after an extensive screening process which involved evaluating 33 applicants through screening interviews, essay surveys, and simulations to identify leadership skills. A team of municipal and local government management experts evaluated each candidate on various exercises designed to assess critical competencies required for the position.

McKirahan’s Background

McKirahan has an impressive background, serving as an ICMA Fellow for the City of Fort Lauderdale, FL, where he focused on multi-departmental performance. He also brings extensive experience in communications and marketing from his time working at the UNC School of Government. Before joining Pinehurst, McKirahan worked as an analyst for budget and management services for the city of Raleigh.

Community Reception

Town leaders expect to announce a date and time for a reception at Mills River Town Hall where the community can meet and greet McKirahan once he is on board. The council believes that McKirahan will be a great fit for the town, especially given his background in strategic planning.

Mayor and Council’s Statements

Mayor Shanon Gonce expressed confidence in the council’s decision, stating, “The Town Council looks forward to working with him in the future and believes he will be a great fit, especially given his background in strategic planning.” McKirahan also expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, saying, “It’s an honor and a privilege to serve the Mills River community in the role of town manager.”

Recruitment Process

When the previous manager of Mills River took another position in Granite Falls, the council engaged Developmental Associates to aid in the recruitment process. The firm managed the recruitment and selection process, resulting in the selection of McKirahan after final in-person interviews.

Conclusion

With McKirahan set to start his new role on July 29, the town of Mills River is poised for continued success under his leadership. Residents are eager to welcome him and work together towards a prosperous future for the community.
