Asheville’s Mission Hospital Welcomes New CEO Greg Lowe Amidst Organizational Changes and Challenges

Asheville Welcomes New Leadership at Mission Hospital

Asheville, a beautiful city nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, is buzzing with news this week as Greg Lowe steps into the role of CEO at Mission Hospital, replacing Chad Patrick. This change comes amidst significant organizational adjustments announced by Lowe, who is also the President of HCA North Carolina Division. His plans, as outlined in an email to the staff, aim to streamline operations and improve transparency for both patients and healthcare providers.

What’s the Big Change?

Lowe shared that the restructuring was necessary to better support Mission Hospital’s mission. He emphasized the importance of having direct access to the vast resources and support of HCA Healthcare, allowing for more effective communication between leadership and the medical staff. “This transition will help us achieve our objectives and provide a structure that caters to the needs of Mission Hospital,” he said.

In his email, Lowe mentioned, “This change will allow us to achieve our objectives to streamline our executive structure to better support Mission Hospital.” He aims for this shift to promote open dialogues between staff and management, enhancing patient care and overall operational effectiveness.

Supporting Smaller Hospitals

In addition to his new role, Lowe will continue to oversee Mission Health facilities outside of Asheville, including hospitals in Brevard, Franklin, Highlands, and Marion. He hinted at creating a new position, a Chief Administrative Officer, who will focus specifically on these regional facilities. This move not only reinforces Lowe’s commitment to Asheville but also ensures that the other hospitals continue to thrive, especially during a time when many smaller hospitals are struggling to stay afloat.

A Tough Transition

However, Lowe’s appointment comes during a particularly turbulent time for Mission Hospital. Legal issues have emerged, with North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein having launched a lawsuit against HCA back in December. This lawsuit alleges that HCA failed to uphold promises related to the maintenance of vital emergency and cancer care services. Stein, who is making a bid for governor, has been vocal about the need for HCA to adhere to its commitments made during the acquisition of Mission in 2019.

Senator Julie Mayfield, representing the Asheville area, expressed cautious optimism about the leadership change. “Any change in leadership offers an opportunity to do things differently and better,” she said, hoping that Lowe’s leadership will lead to an enhancement of services for local residents.

Nurses Push for Change

Moreover, the nursing staff at Mission Hospital have been vocal about their concerns following the hospital’s acquisition by HCA. Many nurses became unionized shortly after the sale, and they have since raised multiple issues regarding workplace conditions and patient care. Currently, they’re in the throes of negotiations for a new contract, which was due for renewal in July. However, talks have reportedly stalled, and the nurses have voted overwhelmingly in favor of a potential strike if their demands are not met.

Union representative Kerri Wilson stated, “HCA continues to ignore what nurses are asking for to provide the care our community needs and deserves.” This illustrates the complexity of the current situation at Mission Hospital, as the staff works hard to advocate for their patients and each other.

Looking Forward

As Lowe transitions into his new role, he will also be moving his office to Mission Hospital in the coming weeks. This change is expected to foster a closer connection with staff and allow him to engage more directly with the pressing issues at hand. The hope is that this fresh leadership, combined with a focus on improved transparency and communication, will help Mission Hospital navigate these challenging waters.

In a time where healthcare is under intense scrutiny, the eyes of the community are certainly on Lowe and his plans for the future of Mission Hospital. Will this new leadership truly bring about the change that is so desperately needed? Only time will tell, but the people of Asheville are watching closely.
