Asheville’s North Carolina Stage Company Is Set to Reopen with a Heartfelt Performance
Asheville, a city known for its vibrant arts scene, has faced some challenges recently. On September 27, 2024, the North Carolina Stage Company, Asheville’s only professional theatre, unexpectedly closed its doors due to major utility outages caused by Hurricane Helene. This closure was particularly disheartening as it occurred just two weeks before the highly anticipated opening of their 22nd season. With the cast deep in rehearsals and a nearly complete set, the theatre had to cancel its first show, leaving both creators and audiences eager for what was to come.
But There’s Hope on the Horizon
Fast forward over a month later, and we’re thrilled to announce that the North Carolina Stage Company is ready to reopen! The new show, All is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914 by Peter Rothstein, is not just a performance; it’s a powerful true story highlighting our shared humanity and the possibility of peace during tumultuous times. Set during World War I on the Western Front, this moving tale begins with a German soldier stepping into No Man’s Land and singing “Stille Nacht.” This simple act leads to an extraordinary experience of camaraderie and music amidst the chaos of war. It’s a beautiful reminder that even in the darkest times, there is always room for connection.
A Family-Friendly Holiday Tradition
With the show running from November 29 through December 22, this Christmas tale has become one of North Carolina Stage Company’s most requested performances. Its emotional, historical resonance makes it perfect for families visiting Asheville during the holiday season. You can expect to see a talented trio of actors making their mark on stage: Adam Kampouris, Steve McConnell, and Willie Repoley, alongside an eight-member choir that promises to elevate the performance even further.
Accessible for Everyone
In light of Hurricane Helene’s impacts on the community and the varying levels of recovery experienced by its residents, NC Stage is committed to making this performance accessible to as many people as possible. Starting on November 11, ticket pricing will be offered on a sliding scale, allowing theatre-goers to choose what works best for their current circumstances. You’re invited to reflect on what feels right for you. In the world of theatre, audiences truly are the heart, and the NC Stage team is ready to welcome everyone to enjoy the remarkable history, music, and peace embodied in All is Calm.
A Grateful Heart
Amidst all this excitement, it’s essential to acknowledge the incredible efforts of the various recovery and rescue crews, utility workers, first responders, and volunteer organizations. Their hard work has made a significant difference in the community’s recovery journey. As a token of gratitude, the theatre is offering complimentary tickets to these dedicated individuals. It’s a small way to say thank you for their unwavering commitment during such challenging times.
Looking Ahead
This season’s sponsor for All is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914 is the McGuire, Wood, and Bissette Law Firm, with additional support from the North Carolina Arts Council, The Shubert Foundation, HomeTrust Bank, Blue Ridge Public Radio, Metro Wines, and the Asheville Citizen Times.
