Oklahoma City, OK – The atmosphere was electric as the Oklahoma Sooners faced off against the Tennessee Volunteers in their first game as a member of the SEC. Unfortunately for the Sooners, that electricity turned into a gut-wrenching silence as they fell to the Volunteers 25-15 at home. To say it was not the debut they hoped for would be an understatement.
The Volunteers wasted no time establishing control of the game. Just as the first quarter ticked down, Tennessee took a commanding 10-3 lead thanks to a jaw-dropping 66-yard touchdown pass from Nico Iamaleava to Dont’e Thornton. From that moment on, it was clear that the Sooners were in for a tough night. While the final score might suggest a closer game, those who watched knew it was far more lopsided, with Oklahoma’s offense unable to generate any real momentum.
As the game went on, it became increasingly painful to watch Oklahoma struggle. By the time there were less than 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Sooners had amassed a meager fewer than 100 yards of total offense. Tennessee’s defense was relentless, dominating Oklahoma’s offensive line and leaving the Sooners looking lost. It was puzzling to see a team that entered the SEC season with high hopes flounder so badly.
Things went from bad to worse when Jackson Arnold, who was touted as the starting quarterback after taking over last season’s Alamo Bowl, was benched for true freshman Michael Hawkins. Arnold’s performance was riddled with mistakes, as he threw an interception, fumbled the ball, and even pulled off a cringe-worthy backward pass that Tennessee easily capitalized on. At the time of his benching, Arnold had only completed 7 of 16 passes for a paltry 54 yards and had already been sacked multiple times.
Hawkins, on the other hand, managed to showcase some potential during his brief time on the field. The former four-star recruit made a mark with his agility, setting up two of Oklahoma’s second-half touchdowns with impressive runs to the goal line. Fans are now left wondering if he might have what it takes to lead the team in their next matchup.
Now, let’s talk about Oklahoma’s upcoming schedule, which doesn’t look any easier. After their SEC debut, Oklahoma is gearing up to face Auburn, a team that’s struggling with its own quarterback issues. What’s even more daunting is that five of Oklahoma’s remaining six SEC matchups are against teams currently ranked in the top 16 of the AP Top 25. There’s little time for the coaching staff and players to figure out what’s going wrong with the offense.
While Tennessee celebrated their victory, it’s worth noting that they stumbled a bit in their execution as well. Iamaleava had his own struggles, fumbling twice under pressure and not exactly lighting up the scoreboard. Yet, despite those bumps, it was Oklahoma’s ineffectiveness that allowed Tennessee to cruise through the game without needing a standout performance from their offense.
The Volunteers now find themselves in a sweet position moving forward, only facing two ranked teams left on their schedule. Even if they stumble in those games, they have a realistic path to a 10-2 record, which could set them up nicely for the College Football Playoff, even if they miss out on the SEC title game.
As Oklahoma walks away from this frustrating SEC debut, there are many questions left hanging in the air. Will Hawkins take the reins for the next game? Can the offensive line pull itself together? Or will this season spiral out of control before it even gets going? The Sooners need answers, and they need them fast.
