Asheville Schools on High Alert Amid Online Threats

Asheville, N.C. – Over the past few days, our peaceful city has found itself caught in a web of online threats targeting schools across North Carolina. It’s reported that more than 40 schools statewide are dealing with similar situations, with several located right here in the western part of the state. Schools in Henderson, McDowell, and Asheville have all stepped forward to provide information to concerned parents and students.

This morning, parents received an urgent message from the Asheville City Schools’ Superintendent, Dr. Maggie Fehrman, acknowledging the troubling circumstances. One parent, Kate Griffin, shared her feelings openly: “I just get sick. It makes me sick that people make threats like this that cast a wide net just to scare people. I’m disheartened and sad.”

Griffin’s sentiments echo the concerns of many parents who are frightened about the safety of their children. One of her main worries is the lack of effective communication regarding these incidents. She voiced her concerns, saying, “I don’t believe we have a very widely-known set of protocols in place to alert the parents as soon as something happens.” As unsettling as these threats are, Griffin believes that parents should be kept more informed to help alleviate some of the trepidation surrounding these events.

Understanding the Threat

As threats became more frequent, Asheville Middle School became part of this wider situation, prompting local law enforcement to remind students and parents that threats will always be taken seriously. Asheville Police Department (APD) Captain Jonathan Brown explained the procedures in place: “Threats will be followed up on,” he stated. “We look through digital files, social media profiles, and put pieces of a puzzle together.” In his role, Captain Brown has been supervising cases involving school threats since 2015 and is familiar with the delicate balance between public knowledge and the privacy of minors.

One persistent challenge, according to Captain Brown, is the restriction on disclosing specific details to parents and the wider community because many cases involve juveniles. He elaborates, “The tender ages of school children often keep us from putting certain information out.” Various legal parameters also constrain the investigation processes, leading to difficult situations where only a portion of the full story is available to concerned parents.

Legal Implications

It’s essential to understand that even if a threat comes from a young individual expressing frustration online, the consequences can still be severe. Captain Brown cautioned, “A young person behind a computer screen or phone, talking out of frustration, can still land themselves in trouble.” It’s a stark reminder that words have weight, even when they are typed out of impulse.

In response to the situation, both Henderson County Schools and McDowell County Schools also issued statements via social media to keep their communities informed. Education officials understand that open lines of communication and timely updates are vital to easing the fears of parents and students alike.

Looking Ahead

As Asheville and surrounding communities navigate this unsettling period, it’s important for everyone to remember the importance of staying informed and looking out for one another. Whether the threats are a product of misguided actions or serious intentions, they are reminders of the ongoing challenges that schools face in maintaining a safe environment for students.

As parents and educators, it is vital to come together and advocate for the resources and communication necessary to ensure the safety of all students during these uncertain times. As we look to the future, keeping lines of dialogue open between schools, law enforcement, and families will be essential in combating these alarming threats and restoring peace of mind in Asheville.
