Online Threats Raise Safety Concerns in Asheville Schools

Online Threats Shake Asheville Schools

Asheville, N.C. – Recently, a wave of unsettling threats has swept across over 40 schools in North Carolina, with a notable number of them based right here in the western part of the state. Schools in Henderson, McDowell, and Asheville have all taken steps to address the situation, and it’s left parents and students feeling quite uneasy.

Concern Takes Center Stage

This morning, Superintendent Dr. Maggie Fehrman of Asheville City Schools reached out to parents regarding the threats that have been targeting students. Kate Griffin, a concerned parent, expressed her feelings wholeheartedly, saying, “I just get sick.” Her voice trembled with emotion as she added, “It makes me sick that people make threats like this that cast a wide net just to scare people. I’m disheartened and sad.”

Like many parents, Griffin is troubled by the communication process surrounding critical situations like this one. She believes that there should be clearer protocols for how parents are alerted when something concerning happens. “I don’t believe we have a very widely-known set of protocols in place to alert the parents as soon as something happens,” she pointed out. Griffin’s plea highlights a crucial aspect of parental concern: the need for timely and effective communication during crises.

Threats Carry Serious Consequences

With the alarm bells ringing, Asheville Police are reminding everyone that the law takes threats seriously. Captain Jonathan Brown has been supervising cases related to school threats since 2015. He emphasized, “[Threats] will be followed up on.” The police are diligently working through digital files and social media profiles to piece together the information. “It’s very likely that there will be a knock at the door,” Brown warned, indicating that investigations can lead to serious implications for those involved.

While it may be challenging to share updates about ongoing investigations, especially when juveniles are involved, Captain Brown assured that all leads are pursued with care. “The tender ages of school children do keep us from putting certain information out,” he explained. This means that while investigations are vital, transparency can sometimes take a back seat due to privacy laws.

A Wake-Up Call for Parents and Students

Captain Brown reiterated that regardless of age, making threats is a serious matter. “It could potentially lead to charges,” he cautioned. He emphasized that even comments made in frustration by young people behind their screens can result in significant consequences. “They have no intention of carrying out the threats, but they can still land themselves in trouble,” he added.

Community Reaction

In light of these events, Henderson County Schools have also addressed the alarming situation through their social media platforms, echoing the sentiment of safety first and the importance of communication. McDowell County Schools have shared similar sentiments, reinforcing their commitment to student safety.

As this unsettling situation continues to unfold, concerns about student safety resonate deeply within the Asheville community. Parents are hoping for more robust communication from schools, as they come together to support one another during this challenging time. As Griffin poignantly observed, “When any threat happens, it does not just involve the schools and community – The law becomes a part of it.”

The Path Forward

In the coming days, we can only hope that the required measures will be taken to not only make students feel safe but also to foster a community that actively supports open dialogue. Parents, students, and law enforcement are all resources in this shared responsibility of safety. The strength of Asheville’s spirit lies in its unity and resilience, crucial during these uncertain times.
