Keep an Eye Out for Poetry in Plain Sight in Asheville

The city of Asheville is buzzing with a new artistic initiative that is bringing poetry to the forefront of local businesses. Poetry in Plain Sight, a program by the North Carolina Poetry Society, is gaining momentum in Asheville with an increasing number of local windows showcasing poetry posters.

Promoting Poetry in Asheville

Asheville’s vibrant arts scene has long been celebrated for its visual displays, from murals to sculptures. However, the written arts, particularly poetry, have often taken a back seat. Poetry in Plain Sight aims to change that by selecting poems from North Carolina poets and printing them on posters for display in businesses’ windows.

A Local Initiative

Alida Woods, a poet and former Asheville City Schools educator, took initiative to bring Poetry in Plain Sight to Asheville. By approaching local businesses and securing spaces for the poetry posters, Woods hopes to not only showcase NC poets but also inspire a love for poetry in residents and visitors alike.

Bringing Poetry to the Public Eye

The posters, adorning the windows of establishments like Malaprop’s Books & Cafe and West Asheville Library, offer a moment of reflection and literary appreciation in unexpected places. The program aims to engage people of all ages with poetry and its power to connect and transform.

Celebrating Poetry in Asheville

The city will celebrate the Poetry in Plain Sight program with an event at The Hop West. The unveiling will showcase the current posters and kick off the new program. Additionally, kids aged 5-18 can submit their poems to be displayed at The Hop West on Poem in Your Pocket Day, with a celebration.
