Polk County High School Receives $1,000 Grant for Greenhouse and Garden Projects

Exciting Opportunities for Polk County High School Students

In the charming town of Columbus, big news is buzzing for the students at Polk County High School! Thanks to the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, the school recently received a generous $1,000 grant through their Learning Links grant program. This funding is set to fuel some exciting projects that will not only educate students but also engage them in hands-on learning experiences.

Bringing Nature to the Classroom

So, what exactly is this grant going towards? Well, the funds will be used for the creation of a greenhouse along with materials for raised-bed gardens and a dedicated outdoor crop area. Just picture it—the students getting their hands dirty, planting seeds, and watching them grow right in their schoolyard! It’s like having a little piece of nature and agriculture right at their fingertips, turning classroom lessons into exciting real-world experiences.

Empowering Educators

Alana Nottage, the Leadership Associate who reviewed the grants, shared her thoughts about the innovative proposals submitted by teachers across the region. “As a first-time Learning Links grant reviewer, I was impressed by the innovative ideas that WNC teachers brought to the table,” explained Nottage. “Learning Links grants empower educators to bring hands-on and experiential opportunities to their classrooms.” Her excitement about these projects shows just how impactful they can be for students, helping them to think more critically and creatively.

The Bigger Picture of Learning Links

The Learning Links program is designed to provide public school teachers in various counties—including Polk, Avery, and Rutherford—with the funds they need to bring their learning ideas to life. Grants can go up to $1,000 per classroom, allowing teachers to create memorable and engaging learning experiences that might not otherwise be possible. With the goal of boosting students’ enthusiasm for learning and school, it’s clear that these initiatives hold a lot of promise.

This year alone, a whopping 52 grants were awarded, amounting to a fantastic total of $108,111. These funds come from several charitable endowments, including the Ben W. and Dixie Glenn Farthing Charitable Endowment and the Cherokee County Schools Foundation Endowment Fund, among others. It’s wonderful to see local organizations come together to support education and enrich students’ lives.

A Community Spirit

The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina is committed to inspiring philanthropy and mobilizing resources that enhance lives and communities across eighteen counties in the region. They definitely have a positive impact! Just last year, the foundation facilitated an impressive $24.8 million in charitable giving, showcasing how much support is available within the community.

Looking Ahead

As Polk County High School prepares for this exciting new chapter with their greenhouse and gardens, it’s a reminder of the power of community support and creative teaching. Students will get to learn about biology, responsibility, and the joy of nurturing living things—all valuable lessons that extend far beyond the classroom walls.
