Power Outages and Severe Weather Hit Western North Carolina

Power Outages Persist in Buncombe County After Severe Storms

Asheville, NC – Power outages continue to plague Buncombe County on May 9 following severe storms that swept through the area on Wednesday. Duke Energy reports that as of 8:30 a.m., 2,494 customers in Buncombe County are without power due to damage to trees, powerlines, and electrical equipment caused by the storms. The company warns of additional severe weather expected through Thursday, which may lead to more outages and slow the restoration process.

By 7 a.m. on Friday, May 10, Duke Energy had restored power to all but 182 customers in Buncombe County and anticipated full restoration by 10 a.m. In neighboring Jackson County, 659 customers remained without power as of the same time.

Hail, Flood Risks, and Possibility of Tornados

Meteorologist Scott Krentz of the National Weather Service reported hail reaching up to 3 inches in size in Barnardsville and heavy rainfall across Western North Carolina. While flooding concerns have shifted northeast, the area saw significant precipitation, with Asheville receiving nearly 3 inches of rain and Haywood County seeing almost 4 inches.

There were reports of potential tornado activity, with a tornado warning issued for Cleveland County east of the region. Krentz stated that a storm survey is underway to assess any tornado effects in the area.

Today’s Weather Outlook

Krentz predicts that the morning thunderstorms on May 9 will subside by 9 a.m., with showers lingering until midday. The NWS warns of the possibility of strong to severe storms, with damaging wind gusts and small hail in affected areas. Friday, May 10, carries a 40% chance of precipitation and potential thunderstorms.

Highs are expected to reach around 78 degrees with light and variable winds, and rainfall amounts between a quarter and half an inch are possible. Gusts of up to 20 mph may occur, with an 80% chance of precipitation throughout the day.
