Asheville Faces Historic Challenges After Recent Flooding
Asheville has seen its fair share of storms, but the recent flooding in Biltmore Village has left a mark that’s hard to ignore. Classic buildings, including the one that housed the Southern Appalachian Craft Guild, have suffered severe damage. Many in the community are feeling the impact, but there is a silver lining as efforts to support historic preservation are underway.
The Preservation Society Steps In
The Preservation Society of Asheville and Buncombe County has been on the front lines, assisting homeowners and businesses striving to recover from the flood havoc. In a recent discussion with Jessie Landl, the Executive Director, she shared some of the many ways the organization is helping those in need. “We want to get funds to those receiving grants quickly,” she said. Immediate assistance is crucial in kick-starting the drying and restoration processes for those affected.
Jessie beamed with pride as she mentioned the organization’s commitment to providing preservation grants ranging from $500 to $5000 for properties that are roughly 50 years or older. Thankfully, the Society was already equipped with $50,000 intended for grants prior to the storm. However, thanks to the overwhelming generosity of donors, including the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, that amount jumped to $150,000 and just recently surged to $200,000.
Where Are the Funds Going?
The grant committee is working diligently to review applications, understanding that while the funds may not cover every repair cost, they represent a crucial first step toward recovery. Six historic buildings in Biltmore Village—each with its own story—have been approved for $5,000 Bricks and Mortar Preservation Grants. These funds will aid places like the Gardener’s Cottage, Bette Boutique, and Casablanca Cigar Bar, all of which have sustained significant flood damage.
Furthermore, the Riverview Station, home to more than 60 local artists and entrepreneurs, is also receiving support. Add to that ten homeowners, including five in Beacon Village in Swannanoa, who are now able to address severe damage thanks to the same $5,000 grant.
A Community Rallying Together
With the sheer volume of damage across Western North Carolina, applications for assistance are pouring in like never before, and the Preservation Society needs the community’s help more than ever. Although they are close to exhausting their current grant funds, applications are still being accepted and kept on file for when more funding becomes available in the future. Those interested in applying can find specifics on the application process at the Preservation Society’s website.
Immediate Help for Those in Need
One outstanding feature of the Society’s efforts is their willingness to provide immediate assistance. If someone needs a generator or dehumidifiers to combat water damage, they can reach out directly to the Preservation Society without the lengthy application process. To date, approximately 25 to 30 dehumidifiers have been loaned out, often rotating back to the Society once they’re no longer needed.
Planning for the Future
Looking ahead, the much-anticipated Time Travel Gala, the Preservation Society’s major fundraising event, had to be canceled due to Hurricane Helene. Originally set to take place in late September at a new venue called In the Oaks in Black Mountain, the event was unfortunately thwarted by Mother Nature. However, plans are already in motion for a rescheduled gala scheduled for May next year. This vibrant celebration will invite guests back in time, featuring a speakeasy atmosphere, live jazz, and intriguing guided tours of the stunning estate.
As Asheville stands resilient in the face of these challenges, one thing is clear: the community’s spirit remains strong. Support for the Preservation Society and their incredible work is vital now more than ever. Mark your calendars and consider joining the gala next May. Together, the community can ensure that these historic structures continue to tell their stories for generations to come!
